medicine
I'm interested in doing a 6 year medicine course (i'm currently year 12), but i'm not sure if i can apply for medicine with these a level subjects: applied a level science (this counts as two a levels, i'll probably get A*A*), a level biology, a level turkish.
it all adds up to four a levels, but i was thinking that because i don't have a level chemistry i might be at a disadvantage, also i got a c in gcse english, although i got b's and a's in my other subjects.
-the applied a level science course is fairly new and i'm worried that the universities won't take this subject seriously. so guys, do i have a chance in getting into medschool with these subjects? -
Re: medicineI'm not too sure about the whole applied science A level because universities are pretty picky when it comes to needing Biology and Chemistry. Your best bet would be to ask the universities if that is an appropriate substitute of A level Chemistry. The C in GCSE English will hinder your chances a lot because you will be pretty restricted to where you could apply. Your first priority should be finding out about your subject combination though before you deal with your GCSEs.(Original post by smd4std)

Re: medicineapplied a level science is made up of chemistry, physics, biology and forensics. around 70% is made up of coursework and practicals and 30% is written examinations.(Original post by myyrh)

also would should i re take my gcse english in year 13? or would it be better to just stick to the c and take up AS chemistry along with my previous courses? -
Re: medicineNo it isnt.(Original post by The Doggfather)
A Level Chemistry is a mandatory requirement for all Medical Schools
Sorry
How many A's and A*'s did you get at GCSE? -
Re: medicineYes you would definitely need to check with the relevant medical schools if that is accepted.(Original post by smd4std)

I would recommend you resit the English Language because with a C you only have about 2-3 universities to choose from.
Manchester foundation course is directed at those with a predominantly non science background so someone who has mostly arts/humanities subjects at A level and maybe one science so I doubt foundation courses would be an option unfortunately.(Original post by smd4std)
i was looking up manchester university and they had this 6 year course with a foundation year, it seemed interesting. i'm also looking into other universities to apply to -
Re: medicine
Hey! i was wandering if maths is compulsory for medicine.. I've always wanted to study medicine and im sure working really hard for it.. I got 4 A* at GCSe, 2A's 1B and 1C.. with my a levels everythings looking good atm except for maths.. just cant deal with it and its taking me a great deal of work to maintain high B's... what can I do? thanks a lot!

Re: medicineC in english lang. but wouldnt someone with a background in science have an advantage over people with arts...?(Original post by The Doggfather)
I'm not sure if you're eligible for the foundation year
It says you need 3 rigorous arts/humanities subjects
OR 2 rigorous arts/humanities subjects with 1 science
OR 1 rigorous arts/humanities subject with 2 sciences (not Chemistry)
What did you get in GCSE English Language? -
Re: medicineYou don't need to do A Level Maths(Original post by cspb)

My friend is doing Biology, Chemistry and Geography at A2 and got an offer from Liverpool. He did Maths at AS Level but got a B. -
Re: medicineWith your subject combination I can't think of any which immediately spring to mind.(Original post by smd4std)
are there any universities you guys would recommend?
If medical schools allow the Applied A level as a two subjects but not a substitution of chemistry, then you should take AS chemistry during your A2 and resit your English Language. -
Re: medicineIf Turkish is your native language, A level Turkish almost certainly won't be counted as part of any offer you get, so you'd need an extra AS level subject to meet the standard '3 A level + extra AS' offers.(Original post by smd4std)

Re: medicine
You could;
- Take AS Chemistry next year and GCSE English Language (as well as continuing your A Level Applied Science A Level & Biology, Turkish)
- Then in a 3rd year, finish your A Level Chemistry ONLY and apply for 2014 Medicine entry
You should have all A's / A*'s
By the way, do you happen to be Turkish or of Turkish descent?Last edited by The Doggfather; 15-05-2012 at 22:16. -

seriously i'm not an idiot, i'm going to get all A*'s in my current courses -
Re: medicineIt isn't as stupid as it sounds, I'm doing that (well kind off). You do come of as slightly arrogant though. A*s at A level is no walk in the park.(Original post by smd4std)

You're supposed to complete each individual A Level within a 2 year period so you can't do your current A Levels in a 3rd year. No point in having just AS Level Chemistry, you gonna have to need to full A Level.
Actually forget Medicine 2013 or 2014 entry, just do a related course like Biomedical Sciences, get a 2.1 or higher and then do graduate entry Medicine. Its cuz you don't meet the GCSE requirements. I'm only trying to help...
