Living with a really ridiculous name
I have a ridiculous name. I don't know what my parents were thinking when they gave it to me. Whenever I tell people my name, I can see them falter for a moment as if trying to decide whether I'm having them on or not.
It's been my name for over twenty years, I don't want to change it and anyway, changing my name is rather disrespectful towards my parents. Has anyone else with a ridiculous name got advice on how to live with it? -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous name
It's not disrespectful to your parents! I dislike my name (although that's personal choice as its not ridiculous), and if it wouldn't be so weird to change it then I would.
One of my closest friends literally just lives with it. Its not super stupid, just really dated, a proper 50 year old dad name. He acknowledges its silly, and even makes jokes about it himself (after all, what are we if we can't poke fun at ourselves every once in a while?)
People may be surprised a little, but ultimately nobody cares. Its a relatively small issue when considered by an outsider. I promise that to other people its nothing like the awkward embarrassment that forms in your own mind.
In short; Possible solutions:
- Make fun of it yourself and get used to it
- Change it
- Go by a middle name or a nickname
- Live out your life in hiding or never get to know somebody on a first name basis?

Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameI work with someone who does this. My middle name is far too formal to use as a first name. The shortened version sounds like a childs' name and a relative has that name.(Original post by The Patriot)

Your parents are funny. They knew what would happen to their daughter with that name. -

Re: Living with a really ridiculous name
I once told my name to a stranger I'd just met and they asked me if I'd made it up haha (they were serious). Don't worry about it - if you act like its normal and seem comfortable with it, then others will too. It's only when you're weird about it that others pick up on that and behave similairly.
