Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameIm Irish with a more British firstname and a scandinavian surname so feel your pain(Original post by That Bearded Man)
Not going to say online I'm afraid,
Although I've an Irish first name and a Scandinavian surname

Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameWhich is also a plant. My parents claim to have no knowledge of what they were about to do.(Original post by Joinedup)
I expect at 20 the worst of the teasing is now behind you... But you could always change it to Mulberry... Or just go by your middle name.
Surprisingly, teasing never happened. It's just the look of disbelief that follows whenever the full name is said that gets to me. -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameWhat's wrong with rose bush?(Original post by TheSownRose)
It makes me look as though I'm playing a joke every time I say my name...
Oh wait.. right...
I can dye 'it' for you if you like.

Re: Living with a really ridiculous name
OP : Okay, Rose Bush is kind of funny, but in a very lighthearted way. You don't see Minnie Driver changing her name
Like some people have said already, it's a great icebreaker when you meet somebody!
Oh golly your surname is fine! You really hate it that much? Okay, so I did once ask you how it was pronounced, but once you know, then you know. It really is a perfectly fine surname. Tha worries too much Si(Original post by silverbolt)
When i move back to Ireland im thinking about changing my surname i hate it, its vulgar, ugly and no one can pronounce it especially back home. granted i pronounce it wrong on purpose but i really cant stand it so im thinking of taking my grandparents family name - so my mothers maiden name.
When i get married and have have kids i dont want them having this surname
Course if it bothers you that much then by all means change it, but honestly I think it's fine. What does Anne think?
Well I was born with a right mouthful of a name. Natalie Jeanne Antonina Tourtois. Yep - try saying that when you're drunk lol.
And you can be damned sure that everybody and his dog thought my surname was pronounced Tortoise....which it wasn't. It's French, so it is like....Tor-Twar (sort of)....like Bruxellois (Brussels) - for those of you with an inkling of French pronunciation there!
And it doesn't even MEAN "tortoise". It stems from "torte" (i.e. a cake)
But anyway, I digress.
When I was 15 I changed my surname to Glyn (an surname that has absolutely NOTHING to do with my family on either side - it's just that my mam decided it was a good surname to have).
When I finally met my French grandad when I was 17 (who I hadn't seen since I was 3), and he discovered that I wasn't a Tourtois any more like him, he was pretty much heartbroken. I felt awful as though I had totally betrayed him.
Anyway I got married at 21 and now have my husband's surname, so I was only using a "fake surname" for less than 6 years, but even so I regret changing it when I was 15. I should have just stuck with the awkward French surname until I got married.
So there we go.
I still have the awkward mouthful of the middle names though, and I love them to tell you the truth. I like that they're different.Last edited by PinkMobilePhone; 16-05-2012 at 12:18. -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameDon't you sometimes wonder what parents are thinking about when they name their children? It only ends in children being insecure....(Original post by chocolate buttons)
I know a girl who's name sounds like 'genitalia' but she goes by Jen/Gen -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameOoo me too, wonder if we know the same person(Original post by chocolate buttons)

I was talking to a friend the other day who has a lovely name. However she said the other 2 names her parents were considering for her were Daisy (nice) or, wait for it...Celery. HA!
Oh and OP, at least Rose Bush is a pretty object. I shouldn't get too caught up on it, but then again none of us know as we've never had to live with it.Last edited by BeautifullyTragic; 16-05-2012 at 12:46. -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous name
I'm in kind of a lazy mood today, I've slept a total of 7 hours in 3 days and I've run out of coffee so I'll make this short.
Stop caring what people think.
If people are going to be hurtful to you because of who you are they aren't your friends, so what does it matter.
I accept everyone for who they are, subsequently I only consider people with the same attitude my friends.
Social pressure is just for people without personality, looking to be what people want them to be because they're scared of their own identity. Your name is part of your identity, stop caring so much.
First world problems. "How can I live with a name which isn't John Smith" christ, why would you want a normal name?Last edited by Megaross; 16-05-2012 at 13:09. -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameHate it and have done for years, and i sure as hell dont want my wife or kids to come from that particular branch of the family. sounds gutteral and nasty imo.(Original post by PinkMobilePhone)

Anne says its down to me, it was her that convinced me if i hate my surname so much that i should go back to how it used to be pronounced (sky) than how it should be pronounced. But Anne Skey as opposed to Anne Treacy? Or simon Skey as opposed to Simon Treacy Yeah know which one i like the sound of. -
Re: Living with a really ridiculous nameSensible policy when your name's a bit of a mouthful.(Original post by chocolate buttons)

Re: Living with a really ridiculous name
I think you should embrace your name, I like it! It unusual and separates you from every ordinary name.
People always ask my 'is that your real name' when I tell them my name. A lot of people love it, mostly guys! 'Coolest name ever' has been said a few times too. Actually, someone said it today to me! For those wondering - it's LJ Hazzard

Like some people have said already, it's a great icebreaker when you meet somebody!
