Re: Is there a collective name for the Greece/Italy region?
Don't think so. Originally Italy was made up of a bunch of smaller states (Venetia, Tuscany, etc.) and the same for Greece (Athens, Sparta, etc.)
Italy and Greece would have been collective names before the unifications of the two seperate regions and their respective states. If you google the unification of Italy you can learn more about it. We covered it in A-lvl History. Most boring part of history I've ever come across. -
Re: Is there a collective name for the Greece/Italy region?
Yes culturally they do usually come under "Mediterranean Europe" which also include Spain, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus, as well as Occitania (southern France) which is culturally a separate entity from the north.
If it's in an appropriate context you could also call them the "classical civilisations/heartlands", i.e. the Romans and the ancient Greeks. -
Re: Is there a collective name for the Greece/Italy region? You're confused.
Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece and Spain make up the PIIGS - economically failing European countries.
Brazil, Russia, India and China are the BRIC countries, which are developing rapidly economically.
In reference to OP, they're all part of the Mediterranean, although that includes other countries e.g. S France, Spain, Turkey.
