Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12I didn't sit the paper but some of the people in my class did and they said it was an OK paper throughout, but there was a parts of questions they couldn't manage.(Original post by Astonix)
How did everyone find today's paper?
I didn't think there was anything unexpected in there, but I am resitting C1 (got unexpected low 79 UMS in January).
Anyone got any unofficial markschemes yet?
A few people said something about the last part of the co-ordinate geometry question being a problem for them, but the rest of that being fine. Something about a part in the equation of tangent and normal, and then something near the end (that they also found tricky).
My teacher hasn't requested a copy of the paper as yet (and no one took one out of the exam hall like in January) and so he hasn't made solutions as yet. However, if and when he does then I'll have a scan of them and upload them (assuming someone hasn't already done it by then).
What happened in January to result in the lower than expected performance? It was a fairly easy paper (given the grade boundaries).
Hope you've done well though.
What kind of a mark do you think you've got? -
Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12I was told that the the cubic polynomial was: (6 x^3 - 19x^2 + 11x + 6).(Original post by Lism)
I'm fine with my performance in that exam. I struggled on factorizing the cubic polynomial and I did the wrong thing on the inequalities (a). I think (and hope) either a C or a B is coming my way.
Now to prepare for the C2 exam on Friday.
If this is to be taken as fact, then you would have to plug in f(2) = 0 and so have (x - 2) as a factor by the factor theorem.
You would then find that a = 6, b = -7 and c = -3.
You would get this: (x - 2)(6x^2 - 7x - 3)
Factorise to get this: (x - 2)(3x + 1)(2x - 3)
You would then get x values of: x = 2 x = -1/3 x = 3/2
I'm sure you've done well though. Just focus on C2 now, as you say.

Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12Can you remember what was the equation given? I know it was finding the range above 0 as I was told that, but I can't remember was they said it was.(Original post by HP348)
Did anybody work out that inequality? I wrongly thought you had to use quadratic formula.
If you can remember, then I'll give a solution for it. -

3x^2+16x -12 < 0 -
Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12I was told it was greater than zero and not less than zero, but answering it as above:(Original post by HP348)
3x^2+16x -12 < 0
Factorise to get: (x + 6)(3x - 2) < 0
This gives: x = -6 x = 2/3
You want it under the x-axis (I always advise to draw a little sketch at the side of the exam paper to show method).
Therefore, it is a range: -6 < x < 2/3 -
Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12Wow how did i not see 18 times 2.. Arghhh so angry with myself.(Original post by Tullia)

Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12I believe it's against the rules of this forum to discuss specific aspects of the exam until 12:01. Edit: sorry, just found out that this rule only applies to Edexcel exams.(Original post by Tullia)
.
Anyway, I took this today, after getting 88 UMS last year and really wanting 95+, it was a very easy paper. Nothing out of the ordinary, apart from the last geometry part which has only ever been on one other C1 paper. It was very easy anyway, I'm expecting high grade boundaries, but feel very confident.Last edited by Existentialistic; 16-05-2012 at 16:49. -
Re: Wjec maths c1 16/06/12I thought I would return the favour, as you did -rep me for no reason. I'm very much aware of the rules of the forum. If you choose to +rep me when you next can, then I'll again return the favour as I'm not one to hold a grudge.(Original post by Existentialistic)

I didn't sit the paper as I sat in January and got a solid A, but what you've said is also what I've heard from others. -
I thought it was quite a nice paper, 1(b) (iii) was tricky but doable! I messed up the question where you had to put put it = to 9 and I put it equal to -1/9
hopefully ill still get a mark for the right method though! Thoughts on grade boundaries? How many marks for an A?

Yes it was
For the last question on coordinate geometry, did everyone get
?
