Art Applicants for 2013 entry
Hey creative people!

This is even earlier than last years thread but who cares!
The thread to discuss decisions, dilemmas and everything else arty for the up comming UCAS cycle
I'll be doing an art foundation at my local college in September, and the universities im thinking of applying to are: UCL, Edinbugh College of Art, Leeds, Leeds College of Art, Falmouth, UAL....and probably a couple more by the time I apply
Thinking of applying for fine art maybe graphic design depending on how my foundation goes! -
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
there is at least one, who's me
but maybe it's just a bit to early for a lot of people being here...I also noticed that these last two weeks posts on the creative arts forum get less and less...probably due to the fact that application processes are more or less finished now...people got offers and the only decisions left are concerning accomodation...
anyway, as I apply for my second degree (and the first one was not an "art-degree"), I will only apply for several foundations in england and not to BAs ('cause I can't pay the high fees on my own)...
and parallel I'll probably apply to some scottish places (the fees being close to affordable and I even have a hope that the SAAS could help me out since I didn't receive any funding for my first degree in austria) which do four-year -courses...
and I'm happy to know that there is at least one other person already thinking about all of this
-
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
Yeah i knew it was early when i made it
hopefully it'll pick up after exams and stuff with the new intake
What was your first degree if you mind me asking? I'm doing my foundation at a local college because it's so much cheaper and you dont get a loan for a foundation year at a uni
I'm with you with the scottish unis! They're some of the best places in the UK and with lower fees, you cant lose!

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
Hey
im looking at an art foundation too
only just really decided thats what I want to do
If you don't mind me asking do most people usually stay local for their foundation degrees?
Also what actual colleges/unis do the foundation degrees
im struggling to find where you can actually do them?
-
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entrydo you mean a foundation diploma? a foundation diploma lasts for one year and you go onto a full three year BA afterwards, whereas a foundation degree lasts two years and you just top it up with third year BA. most people do foundation diplomas locally as you're not entitled to a student loan, so if you do it somewhere away from home you have to support yourself financially. a college local to you should do the course, i live in an extremely un-arty place and there are still two foundation courses here haha.(Original post by Bethany:D)

or if you did want to do a foundation degree, you're entitled to student loans so you can study away from home easily. -
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
hey, i'm doing my art foundation at camberwell and want to carry on there to do illustration in 2013. i need to go to open days to see where the other good courses are! a lot of illustration degrees seem to be combined with animation or graphics, but i'd like pure illustration so it limits my choices quite a bit. brighton, norwich and bournemouth seem to be good options so far, but we shall see.
anyone else wanting to go into illustration? -

In regards to where, check out your local colleges for them as quite a lot of them offer a foundation of some sort. If you wanted to go to a university UAL offer some of the best which'll give you great degree prospects after. For other places I'd only recommend applying if it specialises in art (like Leeds College of Art) as you might as well save yourself money and go to a local college. -
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entrymy first degree was social-and cultural anthropology combined with ancient history...some people in the anthropology department actually combined it with photography or other art-medias like film...but unfortunately I was too young at this moment to really know in which direction to go...and also a bit overwhelmed by the choice...anyway it was great studying this, I never regretted! but now it's really time for something different(Original post by pongalo)

@ bethany: where do you live? just google your area and "art and design foundation" or something like this...and you'll see what comes up...also, I remember a list on the UCAS site...and I just found a page on the "whatuni.com" site when I searched for "list of art and foundation courses UK"...plenty of information and choice

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entryso I just found out that starting from september 2013 students over 24 will have to pay the whole tuiton fee for the foundation diploma courses in england... around £4000...(Original post by babsiloi)

that seems to definitely rule out any studies in england for me...so I'll put all my energy into the applications for scotland...it's a pity though...there were several foundation courses I found really interesting...
-
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entryover 18s have to pay it anyway, i didn't think that was new? why would it be £4000? the fees have gone up but they average around £1000. i got accepted into four foundation courses - one asked for £1000, two asked for £2000, and one asked for £3000 (cheeky!), if that helps.(Original post by babsiloi)

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
yes, I think you are right in that prices differ a lot...but apparently until now the government was paying half of the fee without like officially mentioning; sort of a contribution, so that the fee that you see is already only half of what the course actually costs... was that clear
? I hope...anyway, starting from next year this will apparently change...
I saw this on the www.nus.org.uk page because there they are protesting against it...
anyway, I might be wrong...I actually hope so
-
Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entryThat's a useful link. Thanks for that. I see they are introducing loans for it, though, if I've read it correctly, which will be a new thing. At the moment, you aren't eligible for one on an art foundation course.(Original post by babsiloi)

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entryyeah, that's true,...only, I guess I'm not eligible for a loan, as I am not only a mature student, but already have a degree...(Original post by carnationlilyrose)

on the other hand at least for me, this drastic "shrinking" of possibilities increases the motivation for those few places I can still apply to
-

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entryI applied last year for 2 art courses alongside architecture, and now i realise that it was so stupid as the majority of applicants for most art coures have a foundation course of some sort. So I'm with you, doing a foundation at my college and to hopefully get some offers next year(Original post by chloeburling)
Was going to apply direct from a levels for graphic design in 2013 but think maybe I should do a foundation at my college first to enhance my chances!
where are you thinking of applying?
-
I'm doing a foundation diploma next year too
I'm planning in either doing fashion or graphic design whatever I feel I'm better at and enjoy more
. I intend to go to Liverpool after just because I want to live the lifestyle but also thinking Newcastle or the Uni uca?? Can't really remember

Re: Art Applicants for 2013 entry
I'm doin' a foundation diploma too! Should be good, not too sure about staying at college/home for another year
but it'll be worth it in the long run I guess. I'm gonna go on to do Graphic Design an I'm set to get an A at A level in that, but is it true your grades don't matter once you do the diploma? Do uni's just look at your portfolio?! I'm well confused lol
