AS AQA English Language exam 18th May 2012
Its the one on categorising texts then either power/gender/technology.

Any tips for categorising texts- what are the best things to pick out?

Does anybody have any guesses what the type of document it will be?

I think with categorising texts the key is to focus on context. When making a group, for example on graphology, its good to link it to the rest of the text and how it helps the text achieve its purpose / appeal to its implied audience.

    Hey

I'm doing this exam tomorrow and revising for it now
To categorise texts in section a, i got told not to go in the exam with set categories to put thetexts into, but to read all the texts and let the them guide what you're going to write about.
But, saying that, i like to have a vague idea of what i'm going ro write about, such as graphology (preferably lea)e that till last...it's what to tall about once you've ran out of things to say), imperatives, PALG (Purpose, Audience, Language and Genre) - stick this in early on ton to show you're ticking the boxes, err phonology (back channel noises, minimal responses) authoritive aspects (logo, signature, website...)
Ok well thats all i got, good luck!

I think technology is likely to be an email - that is a big area they haven't done in a while, and cat texts just don't prepare, go in with an open mind.

Thanks everyone, yeah context seems to be key to get the most marks. Hope a story doesn't come up as a text tommorow in categorising. I find it really hard to pick out stuff from it unless it has features of a spoken text. Any ideas what sort of things to look out for?

I'd look at purpose, audience, genre first and try to find a simple link.
I try to organise it in to 3 groupings of 2 texts and draw up a really quick table for each grouping.
Then look at graphology, lexis, grammar, semantics and pragmatics and relate to context the whole way through. And contrast the differences and compare the similarites.

Repeat that for your other three groupings

Hope that helped and good luck!

Literary text, grammatical features such as post/pre-modification, sentence moods such as declarative etc, there could be some pragmatics running through it, it could have images which you could use for a graphology group

thanks alot this really helped!!the repetition is also a good point (just looked at my notes and it appears that 'systematic evaluation accross groups' is VIP!) thanks and good luck too!

You might not see this now but grammar is modal auxillary verbs, pronouns, sentence types (declarative, imperative, interrogative, exclamative) and sentence structures (simple, compound, complex). Lexis is adjectives/modifiers, nouns, jargon, dialect... And other things I can't remember :P sorry

Hoping that the section A texts are nice! If so, that shouldn't be too much of a problem..
just worried about section B, can only remember like 4 of Lakoff's basic assumptions of women's language and I bet I'll just panic and forget every theory ever. Power theories are easier imo, but then for power I can't remember epistemic/deontic modality. oh dear. I'll just do whichever looks easier to talk about, and hopefully neither are transcripts

How did everyone find the exam?
I thought it went quite well I did groups of interrogatives, specialist lexis, pragmatics and then I deemed text A problematic. Not sure if I did very good groups though
And I did power, so glad I revised power more than gender the gender one looked really hard! :s
