Would people who have read this say it has 'literary value'? :holmes:

Lol, probably not. I read it and it's really poor written, repetitive, dull and makes me want to scream. The BDSM is portrayed so badly in the book that I can't even take it seriously. It's just another cash cow of literature :/

It's not common Knowledge but Fifty Shades was a Twilight fanfiction called "Master of my Universe". You can still read it for free online if you look hard enough. It's identical. The author just used her "find and replace" function. I'm furious that this was even published.

None whatsoever. I got it to see what all the hype was about. Had to skip huge chunks, it's terrible.

It's gag worthy and makes me really sad for the future of literature if these books are considered best sellers

I couldn't stand seeing Ian Somerhalder in that type of a light! He is m all time fave guy in this industry! Or Nina Dobrev for that matter..
(let alone Selena Gomez- who they were also thinking of casing)

It was obvious to me, even before I knew this fact, that it was very heavily Twilight-derived.
    Spoiler:
    Show
I mean, dark-haired, clumsy young girl from the West Coast who doesn't know how attractive she is (despite having a stream of guys after her) meets devastatingly attractive "mysterious" man. Despite being generally smart and independent, he reduces her to a wibbling mess just by being really hot. He keeps warning her off because he is "dangerous" to her. She whines for ages about whether or not they should be together...

The difference is that in Fifty Shades, they actually get to have sex a lot earlier. But even then, those bits are very repetitive after a while.

I'm not sure about a film version of this. They'd have to tone it WAY down to be allowed to be shown in mainstream cinema, which I think would rather lose the point, as without the kinky sex it's just a rather poor love story.

I made the mistake of reading the original fanfiction then when I found out about how it was being published under a different name, my reaction was pretty much: "WHO THE WHAT THE WHY THE HOW THE ****!!!!!" I'm not even sure it's legal :/ Someone please tell me it isn't.

I don't know about anyone else but books like these really get me raging. For me, it reinforces the idea that it's okay for your boyfriend to be abusive and controlling so long as he is hot.

Helenia much sums it up fairly accurately:

It's an awful book, not worth the paper its printed on and Ian Somerhalder could do much better.

Haven't read these, so I can't comment on the literary merit. But after seeing them in positions 1,2 and 3 in the Waterstones paperback chart, I read the blurb of all of them. They sounded abysmally dull to me...

    Hey guys!
Right I have just finished the book and, although I really enjoyed the book, I am annoyed with the end... I wish it was just a one off book and not a trilogy. I feel that the plot can go no further from here but I was wondering if you guys think it's worth reading the other two books? I'm not much of a best seller kinda girl... I get very into the plots but I'm always so disappointed at the lack of anything deeper than the surface level.
So read the next two, yes or no?

A bit more stuff happens in the second book, but if you enjoyed the first book I think you should read the second. I'm currently in the middle of it now, it's my guilty pleasure

    Re: Fifty Shades Forum
This has got to be one of the best series of books I've read in a long time simply because it is so unbelievably hilarious. I mean, we all remember how stupid the love story between Bella and Edward was, right? This is somehow stupider. And I love it for this. Christian has got to be the most contrived character in the world [['He's a dark, tortured soul, I'm scared- BUT I CAN CHANGE HIM!']] while Ana's pretty much the epitamy of what every girl wants to be/ thinks they are [['I'm a strong, independent woman who can't make up her mind, AND YET THIS IS MAGNIFICENTLY ATTRACTIVE']]. If you want to take it seriously, you're going down the wrong path- this is a book that was made for the sole purpose of having the mick taking out of it.

Oh, and new drinking game: Take a shot every time either Ana bites her lip or Christian touches his hair. You will be bladdered within the first few chapters

They really are. The worst part is that I downloaded them onto my kindle so I couldn't throw it across the room in disgust and stamp on it with a booted heel.

Can someone link me to the original fanfiction? I want to see how cringey it is without paying for it.

The content of it means it's not suitable for linking from TSR (we don't allow links to explicit sites) but it's fairly easy to find by searching.
