Re: how to be a dj?
Hey,
My boyfriend is a mobile DJ and has been for 7 years, he says to start off with have a look around ebay for some small decks and mixers (dont buy new, you may not like DJing and it would have been a waste of money)
Drop him an e-mail (tom at tdmusic dot org) and he said he'd send some links to gear that would be best suited for you! -
Re: how to be a dj?
I wouldn't ask here, there are plenty of websites dedicated solely to dj'ing that will give you loads of help. A good one to get tips would be:
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/
This one is more about people who make music, but has a dj subforum: http://www.futureproducers.com/forum...ng-scratching/
And Youtube channels of course: http://www.youtube.com/user/ellaskins
And programmes you can try on your computer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ulp6eGu2Uw
Digitialdjtips even has its own forum where you should be able to ask questions. You can also try programmes such as 'VirtualDj' which has a free starter version you can download, might give you an idea of what it's all like (and how hard it can be aha) Best of luck and enjoy it!

Re: how to be a dj?Yeah, my ex-bf went from being an a computer programmer to a moderately successful dj by night computer programmer by day. He has a pretty good following, plays in large clubs, does reasonably well in competitions.(Original post by dLg92)
is anyone a dj here or know someone that is
just looking to get some adivce on how i can get started
any hints would be great thanks
He used his laptop and traktor, listened to a hell of a lot of music, put a lot of hours in, entered every comp, volunteered to play for free at people's parties, would play at clubs for no pay, and kept plugging away at it until he broke through in the Sydney club scene.
He never used vinyl/CD decks, it was always mp3 mixing. This causes a sniffy air of arrogance from certain "traditionalists", but he tended to do better because it means less mistakes, no jumps, far more precise and complex transitions, that sort of thing. People listening and dancing don't care what technology you're using if the sound is good (it did help having a couple of mates who owned/managed clubs)
Huge upside is that DJs *always* get laid; even being the DJ's ex/flatmate/sidekick, I got laid because of the reflected glory!#
If you have any talent for it, you'll know pretty quickly. Get traktor, play around, see if you have an aptitude for it.Last edited by TieMeUp; 26-05-2012 at 05:35. -
Re: how to be a dj?
@dLg92
How did you come to the idea of being Dj?
Do you follow numerous music styles?
Are you good with electronics?
How deep is your desire?
....
Answer the questions and you will find out whether you should try yourself or not. Of course, you cannot know before trying but if you aren't really interested, and the only reason for becoming A DJ is cos you like parties, fame, clubs... give up.Last edited by AnnaWintour; 26-05-2012 at 05:48. -
