What A-Level Subjects do you need to do for Medicine?
I'm not sure whether I want to do medicine or not, but I have tried to keep it open to me as an option with my A-level choices, but I do not know if i have succeeded:
History
English Lit
Maths
Chemistry
I am willing to change Maths to Biology, but was wondering if Chemistry and maths alone would be enough to get me into some medicine courses (obviously accompanied with my english/history grade). Whats the minimum number of science subjects required to study medicine, and does Maths count as one? It doesn't need to fit every universities requirements, but hopefully at least 50% (including some good ones). Also, would maths/chemistry be enough to get me into a medical course in america if i choose to study over there? -
Re: What A-Level Subjects do you need to do for Medicine?Almost all med schools ask for at least AS Level biology or Physics as an alternative. Check here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...l_Requirements(Original post by nervouspupil123)

Maths counts as a science, but sometimes they say 'Chemistry and one other laboratory-based science' to purposely exclude maths.
Don't know about US & Canada, sorry. -
Re: What A-Level Subjects do you need to do for Medicine?Hey, as far as i'm concerned all unis ask for an AS level in Maths when applying for medicine.. They also prefer traditional subjects. However, you do have a good mix which may show versatility in comparison to the normal person applying doing Maths and 3sciences. You may want to consider having Biology in there aswell, but do check the university websites as they may have individual requirements.(Original post by nervouspupil123)

Please bear in mind that you'll also need a high ukcat and bmat score!
Hope this helps

Re: What A-Level Subjects do you need to do for Medicine?
Yeah, im gonna have to do biology as well if I'm looking to do medicine! only about a third of the unit on the list would accept my choices, and only several of them (oxford/durham/manchester) interst me anyways :/ I've gotta decide now whether its medicine or not and change my choices! Thanks for your help!

To be fair, if you stuck with the subjects they're asking for and then decide not to go into med, you have a wide array of career prospects ahead of you as Bio, Maths etc covers literally every industry and is useful within them.
Please keep in mind that if you do decide to go for medicine, and are thinking of applying to the universities you just listed... IT IS HIGHLY COMPETITIVE. I know someone with 4A*s at A level who was rejected by all universities. So always have a backup career prospect in mind
