If any mc IS remembered as a "great" some day, it's likely to be one who was technically/musically skilled and critically acclaimed in the rap community, as well as commercially succesful, accessible and popular with the masses.

Eminem fits that description better than most tbh
Yeah you're right, his probably one of the most famous rappers.

Actually, I'm not. Again, would you consider poetry to be music? If not, then rap is not music, as they are the same thing, the same with the speech in iambic pentametre.

Rap today is often combined with music, but it exists and has existed for a long time without music. So, I reiterate my statement: he's not a "music great", but he is a "rap great".
I really don't get what you're driving at. He raps over music. He releases albums full of music.

Or are we saying that Aretha Franklin wasn't a music great cos she only sang?

    pedantic or what

No but you'll learn a little thing about brain surgery. I'm not saying I'm a historian of rap, I ain't got time to take a bull**** PHD studies on that subject. I'm just saying my general level is acceptable and wikipedia provides a general overview of the history of rap just like wikipedia provides the general overview of the history of Britain.
If you only know the "overview" dont come across as an expert then next time kiddo.

What I'm getting at is his music is bland and not "great", regardless of how good his lyrics and rapping are. I'm not sure what's difficult about that as I've stated it a few times now. The thread is "Will Eminem be remembered as a Music great?" and I'm saying "no, because his music isn't that good."

As for Aretha, she wasn't a music great, but she was an amazing singer.

Okay so your distinction between music and rapping/singing IS just pedantry. Fine.

I'd say in his early career Eminem's music was pretty far from bland. But whatever I'm not gonna argue over our opinions.

He'll be remembered for stuff like Puke, Just Lose It, Girls, Ass Like That, Fack, Drips, The Kids, Role Models, Hey Lady, Purple Hills, and other very funny, well written songs, in my opinion. His serious stuff is fantastic too.

    His newer stuff, eh.

    Never forget.

Meh, I'm not really into his funny stuff (there are exceptions, like The Real Slim Shady) because most of it is just about "bangin' hoes" and "doin' dope", which reminds me of most of the crap that's in the charts today. His serious songs are so much better.

    Yes, Yes he will.

Everyone goes on about the beatles and queen and what not, that's because the music they were producing at the time was for that generation, And they have loved it and carried its legacy through to the current day, i assume the same thing will happen for him, I don't like rap that much but i'll always remember him and know who he is..

Eminem is just a very popular artist. Yes he's a good rapper but their are many other rappers who are better than him but are unknown by the masses. Many people who claim he's the best rapper ever usually haven't heard many hip hop artists, so yes he probably will be remembered as a music great just because he's so popular.

Yessss! He's an incredible artist! He's accomplished so much and had to overcome so many racial barriers and prejudices whilst fighting his way to the top. MMLP, SSLP and The Eminem show were amazing! He's working on a new album now! He's a genius imo!

And? What exactly has Eminem brought to the art form to deserve being elevated past "rap great" to "music great"? Nothing that I can see.

Few rap songs can compete with "Lose Yourself" and "Sing for the Moment". The flow and lyrics are just impeccable. New Eminem stuff - not so much. And I used to be a massive rap & hip hop fan so I'm not clueless like the kids who only listen to Lil Wayne.

Err, yes I do know the overview of the rap/hip hop/grime scene, even beyond that. You dont need a PHD to comment on rap, you just need a sufficient knowledge of rap more than the average joe has. Sorry, you just happen to be an average joe.

Maybe you should look past all the stereotypes and aesthetics of the rap genre, and look past all the criticism and controversy. Try this:

It's one of my favourite songs by him. It stands out for me because he raps about such an emotional issue (his bad childhood) and I get goosebumps because of the power he puts into it. Not all rap is about being "gangsta" (this is usually just the crap in the charts today). I think this is the main reason it's looked down upon, because some rap does promote violence.
