In a nut shell, photoelectric effect is:

You fire light at a piece of metal, photons in light transfer energy to electrons which then escape the metal. Any energy left over after escaping the metal is kinetic energy for the electrons. This piece of metal can be attatched to a circuit, and the photoelectic effect can be proven because when firing light a metal, electrons can jump a gap in the circuit and light the LED on the other side.
The light/photon must be of a high enough frequency (threshold frequency) to have enough energy to remove one electron due to the equation E=hf. The minimum energy needed for 'one' photon to remove 'one' electron is called the 'work function'. So Total energy of an electron = the work function + any kinetic energy of the electron.

I haven't started past papers. I need to go through the book first and review stuff.

its a retake, I see. For me its the first time, lets see what happens.

I got a C unfortunately on that one. At least a high C, but this time I'm suree I can aim for an A. :]
Just focus on past-papers and answer ALL questions on the books, especially the revision guide, it was sooo helpful; especially on the Nature of Light; which was the hardest topic for me last year, but it's fine now.

I see, it is indeed tough paper. You need to know alot of theory, the thing I find hard is about potential dividers lol.

Yeh sure will do past papers, and attempt all the questions.

Was the question about finding the magnitude of velocity and the angle around 4.47ms-1 and 63.4 degrees (about) I used 2ms-1 and 4ms-1 btw, not what i got as the horizontal and vertical components - is that alright?

Yeh it can be right, if the mark scheme mentions range of values, for example the answer should be in range of 1-2mm e.t.c. And if you got in the range you get the mark, if not they will look over your working and give mark but may not give the mark for the right answer.

I used what I worked out for horizontal and vertical components. The answer I got was close to what you statet.

It may not be. Usually the re-sit papers are easy, but the actual papers which are not resit papers are hard.

whoever is doing a resit for unit 2 . trust me it will be quite easier and similar to the Jan 2012 paper. resitters will find it quite easy, however, first sitters should revise properly since it will be a bit hard.

i remember posting in one thread to revise prefixes and stuff for unit 1 mechanics today, and guess what????? they had asked us lool. lucky guess but i had predicted it since they havent given us those kinds of questions in years. was really hoping for seatbelt, brakin and stopping distance and young modulus questions but there was none to be found.

I hope noone feels that they didnt do good today.

hope for the best, expect the best lol- my quotes lol

Noooo!. That's not true. Usually the January papers are way harder than the June papers
