    A level choices.
Hi all, I've recently finished working for two years in Stockholm and I'm returning to the UK to do my A levels in September.

I'm 19 on the 7th of July and I'll be 21 when I go to university, am I too old? Am I too old to enjoy the different experiences of uni?

So far I have chosen to study English literature, ancient history, philosophy and I'm not sure about the fourth subject.

I really want to study English further at uni, so what would you recommend as a fourth subject?

-Am I too old to enjoy uni?
    -Are my subjects strong choices?
-What would you recommend as a fourth subject?

    Hi,

I don't think you're too old at all - I'm 25 and planning to go to uni next year. All universities will have mature students so there will be people your own age and you won't actually be that far off the age of a lot of people coming straight from college anyway!

As for the choices, I think if you want to study English at uni then it might be worth thinking about English Language as well as English Literature? I did Drama as well and loved it, but that was when I was at college so it wouldn't work for distance learning if that's what you're doing. Oh and Psychology is interesting as well.

My advice as someone who has tried a variety of things is that what's most important is doing something that really interests you. You'll enjoy it more, work harder and do better.

Don't let your age put you off uni. Most places like mature students because they have a lot to say, lots of life experience and can contribute in different ways to discussions etc...

I hope you find some subjects you really enjoy!

    Hi Jennie

Thank you very much for the reply, I really appreciate it. English Language, English Literature, Ancient History and Philosophy sounds good to me.

I really enjoy the English language, so I aim to study it further and maybe become a teacher. I just wanted to pick subjects which would help improve my writing skills too.

Anyway, I hope everything goes well and I hope that you get into university!

I think you've already made your choice, but have you considered a language A-Level, such as Spanish or German?

Thanks for the reply, I already speak Swedish fluently, and a bit of Norwegian. I was born in Malmo.

I have no plans to study another language at the moment, I'm just trying to be really careful with my choices. I don't want to pick anything that is considered to be a weak subject.

My brother studies computer science at Durham, and he says that these subjects are great but I'm still being cautious!

I just really want to get into a great university!

Universities look at languages with a lot of respect, its hard to learn a new one and the regard them highly, also have you considered doing a pure science?

Its just doing both English's, you will have at very least 2 essays to do per week, and adding a sciene may diversify your workload a bit more.

Like I said I am Bilingual, I don't think I would learn another language.

Also, would there be any problems if I took three AS subjects in the first year, then in the second year when I'm doing three A2 subjects, take an AS too. Usually people take 4 AS subjects in the first year, but would there be any problems if I did the above?
