Acceptable A Level Subjects
Hi guys, I'm going to apply for Chemistry at Sheffield after my exams (AS) and I'm just wondering, is Business Studies considered a 'bad' subject? Like a cop out subject? Because I didn't enjoy Geography at all this year and don't want to take it at A2, but if Business Studies prevents me from getting in I'll regret it.
I take Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies & Geography at the moment, definitely taking Biology & Chemistry next year.
The link below says it's accepted and they normally expect A level students to present two A levels from this list.

Can anyone put my mind at rest? Cheers -
Re: Acceptable A Level Subjects
business studies is not highly regarded and geography is very well respected with universities, i actually think business studies is back listed but not 100% sure but the link you have provided says its a accepted subject so thats good. Also it doesn't make sense to drop it if you didn't like geography at AS your more likely not to do well in it at a2 would you prefer getting a A in business or a C in Geography?

Re: Acceptable A Level Subjects
As long as your doing chemistry and biology Sheffield won't mind what the third a level is really, I got accepted to Sheffield to do chemistry with chemistry, physics and ict. I mean ICT isn't that great :P
The only thing is you'll have to do a maths module as you don't have a level maths but I wouldn't worry about that its an okay module really

Re: Acceptable A Level SubjectsIt's possible that because you want to do a science subject, they'll look for science-y subjects in your A-Level. Geography is more science-y than Business Studies, so you may be safer doing Geo. HOWEVER every university is different and they may not care.(Original post by JonnyDub)

I think the best thing for you to do is write to them at either (chemistry-admissions@sheffield.ac.uk) or (chemistry@sheffield.ac.uk). When I was applying to universities, I found that the easiest way to get information was the email the departments either on their admissions email or general enquires email. They were usually helpful. -
Re: Acceptable A Level SubjectsGiven you are doing another science as well I wouldn't worry too much - I agree with the post above - its best to check with the department themselves. At the end of the day an A in Business Studies is better than a C in Geography as far as a university is concerned. Business is a weaker subject than Geography ( I did both at GCSE and kept Geog for A Level), but I don't think that would matter in your situation. As long as you had predicted grades in Biology Chemistry and Business that met what Sheffield were asking for, they would make you an offer(Original post by JonnyDub)
