O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
I am trying to buy a sony xperia s on o2 from phones 4 u. I applied for it today by phone but it came back saying my credit check was refused. I've looked at all the reasons why a credit check can be refused and the only one that fitted me was poor credit history at my home address. This is true as my dad has some loans and an overdraft I think. But I'm completely separate from him. I'm a student living away from home, with my own completely separate income. I have chosen a contract that I know I can afford. I have never been in my overdraft even though I do have one in case I need it in the future. I don't think it's fair that it has been refused for this reason. I really want this phone, it's on a very good deal and I want to be on o2. I can't ask my parents to apply for it for the same reason as they'll probably just refuse it again. My boyfriend has said he would apply for it for me, but he already has a contract of his own and he's also a student so they might not let him have another contract. I really don't know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks. -
Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
At the moment I'm staying in halls, but on the application they wouldn't let me put my halls address, I had to put the address of my parents. And part of the credit check looks at the credit rating of that address, which clearly isn't good enough to get the contract. I just don't think it's fair. I'm 18 and I should be able to have my own contract because I have my own income. The application clearly doesn't account for students living away from their parents. Because even if I was living in a house, I would still have to put the address where my card is registered, which is home. I really don't know what to do. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
Just get a pay as you go phone.
I'm using a pay as you go Iphone 4 and I get free 250mb of internet per month. So basically I pay 0 monthly to be able to use Orange's 3G network. Which is pretty cool considering the sim card only costs like 10 pounds -
Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...But my boyfriend has just been accepted on exactly the same deal that I have, and he hasn't had any credit or loans either. So why would they accept him and not me?(Original post by sam.hunton)
The reason is just as likely that you don't have a credit rating as like you said, you haven't had any credit or loans before. -

Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
That's really, really strange. Your credit rating should be completely seperate from your parents. My Mum's credit rating is abysmal but that has never had any effect on me when i lived at home, even when i'd just turned 18. You have a student account so obviously you have some form of credit rating! If you have to get a contract phone, maybe try a different provider?

Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
i must say this is rather strange ive never heard of anyone being refused a phone contract for that reason? i mean my parents credit rating has been shot to **** for years now but didnt stop them giving me a contract ... are you sure thats the reason? but id be careful getting someone else to apply on your behalf, if for some reason you run into financial difficulty and cant pay them theyre not going to be amused being tied down to a contract without you backing it, ring up o2 to see what theyre on about or go to experian and see what your personal credit rating is like [its free

Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
As a general piece of advice it's relatively straightforward to check your credit history, this site explains all about it: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/loa...g-credit-score
Does your dad have a really bad credit history? Because even assuming your credit history did get tainted by/confused with his, I know from experience that you need a pretty shocking credit rating to get declined for phone contracts. Otherwise it would seem like a cock up somewhere. -
Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
Yeah its not unheard of for a poor credit rating in the home you live in (or your card is registered to, in this instance) affect your own credit rating. My friend's father was made bankrupt and she could never get credit while they were registered as living at the same address, even though he no longer lived there.
I wouldn't recommend getting someone else to apply for you. Judge Judy would not approve. Also my friend mentioned above had the same problem, she got her fiance to apply for the contract in his name. When they split up he had her phone cut off and reported her to the phone company for fraud.
If you an't get a phone on credit, why not go for PAYG or a rolling contract for now. Once you have a permanent address away from your parents you can transfer all the cards etc to there and apply again. Also bear in mind that every credit check is logged on your record, so applying for several in one go will hurt your credit rating. Probably better not to apply for another contract immediately, but check your credit rating and apply only when you're fairly confident of acceptance. -
Re: O2 contract refused because of my parent's credit rating...
If you're applying for it using your halls or flat address the fact that your dad has bad credit won't matter. It has been known that your address can affect you getting credit.
However, the reason simply may be that you have not had credit before. Most places won't give you credit if you don't already have a credit rating. Sounds strange considering you need credit, for credit. Have a look at something like 'CashPlus' card.. a prepaid debit card that helps build up your credit rating without being tied into a monthly contract or anything
