How to analyse structure in 'The Crucible'?
I am doing a bit of last minute revision for my English Lit exam on Tuesday, but I am stuck as to how to analyse structure in 'The Crucible'. I am particularly interested in how the structure links to themes in the play- especially intolerance, reputation and empowerment. If anyone has any ideas of what this analysis could include- that would be very helpful!

The main idea is that, since it's a play, Miller wants to interact with the audience as much as he can. He does this by using the hysteria and climaxes in the different acts to shock the audience and put them in the position of the accused. This shows the relevance of the themes intolerance, reputation and empowerment, and much more.

That is what I thought your question meant... If it wasn't please tell me and I'll alter my answer to answer you I've got this exam as well,so good luck!

hi i did the crucible for my AS English coursework so I may be helpful but I didn't really focus on structure that much.

You could talk about the chronology in the play as although the chapters are successive they usually leave a time gap in between which could be to create suspense in the climate of fear that they were experiencing and link it to the the context of the McCarthy witch trials.

It could also symbolize how the events unfolded and could be a reflection on how the villagers were powerless to stop the influence of the abigail and the other girls. Flashing forward creates an intense build up to the climax, and you could link this to empowerment as the reader is unable to stop it much like the villagers are unable to stop the girls.

i probably phrased that really bad sorry haha

You could say that reputation is tarnished by the frequent breaking of privacy- this is reflected by each scene which is broken up many characters entering and exiting at their own accord (structure point)
