Anyone here done a clinical trial?
How did it go, what was it for etc? Any bad side effects? Just interested, starting a non-drug one in a few weeks (loads of sleep and light deprivation going on instead) and I'm fairly nervous, but the money (£1750) is very welcome.

    So, experiences?

yes I did a phase 1 test for a substance
It was related to MRSA it was administered on my arm in gel form
cant really remember what it was now.

I got payed allot for doing nothing would do it again.
I had to sleep there a few nights a little boring

but i would never take a phase 1 drug.. thats crazy and not very safe

I guess its possible i might die in 10 years from a problem caused by the test by i will never know and its like they would warn me.

i remember when i was there another test was going on.
these people had a box on their belt with a tube from the box up their nose and into their stomach they had to be awake and sleep like that for a few days.. pass on that thx

For mine I'll be kept awake for a full day then go on a staggered sleep pattern, before going back to just fully awake and stuff, it's pretty crazy the pattern that is set up, ordered some light reading (scifi books etc) for the time there, going to take some DVDs too

I haven't done one and never would for something like a medicine - IMO it's just not worth the risk. Although I would do something like you did OP.

I've never done a drug-based clinical trial (although I used to work with someone who did loads of them - and she was completely, totally and utterly bonkers in everyday life). I don't think I would, just because of the risks.

However, I have taken part in various studies (medical and psychological) which have involved being pushed, prodded, giving samples, answering questions etc. It doesn't pay quite as well, but at least I'm not going to die from doing them.

One my mum signed me up for at birth (not kidding), and otherwise I have found out about them through gumtree and the university's email that they send out weekly looking for research participants - often in the psychology department, but also for things like contact lens trials.

I know someone who did a drug one and he went a little odd (though he was a bit strange anyway). Apparently he dropped his pencil in a lecture, picked it up, laughed like a maniac and ran out... according to my friend who was in the lecture anyway. To be honest, I wouldn't do a drug trial, but sleep depravation and non-drug trials should be fine and should not do any damage to you. I would just steer clear of drug ones because you really don't want to put potentially unsafe drugs into your body

Ah, not exploiting me per se - I don't think she was paid for it herself at that point (I believe my placenta is still in a freezer), but they have been paying me to hand over bits of my body (blood, milk teeth, hair), answer random questions and have scans done since I was about 5!

In all fairness, I'm happy to carry on doing it myself now as I see the benefit in the research (and I get paid!)

I did some clinical trials in hospitals in Massachusetts. There was one sleep/light deprivation advertised for $2800. I would have to be hidden away from sunlight in a hospital room for two weeks straight and have no contact at all with the outside world! That just sounds like $2800 will not be able to cover the mental side effects of that one! Depression/anxiety have a higher chance of developing with that sort of study so do be careful!

Whenever they pay a lot I am always suspicious. The clinical trials that I did do involved non-invasive techniques (no medication) such as stress reduction. Paid about $300.

Good read, but 4 of those look drug based so they don't really worry me, I'd never go near any sort of drug based one.

    Here's the one I'm doing:

may I ask how this went for you? I am thinking of doing this, was it okay? The sleep pattern does seem daunting

I forgot I'd made this thread, I was rejected for occasionally needing anti-histamine. Sort of sucks but I get to enjoy my last free summer before teaching and everything I guess too
