Is it too late too apply?
Discussion for those studying in the United States and Canada

Re: Is it too late too apply?Hi, whilst I cant say that I have much experience in the matter, I too am interested and am In the same position as you (Year 12, just missed the deadline).(Original post by Obscenedilemma)
I'm a year 12, lower sixth student and I missed the SAT deadline for exam taking place on June 2nd
Have I basically screwed myself over?
What would be the next best course of action, I can't seem to see the future dates of the SAT exams on the website
However, I do believe that the SAT exams do run around the october-november time also, and I think that US universities will accept your SAT results even after this time. I remember reading that most students take the SATs first this summer, then again if they need to improve in october-november. -

Re: Is it too late too apply?
For admission to the autumn term in a given year (say 2013):
Assuming you apply for the regular decision cycle (= applications due January 1 or January 15 (2013), decisions rendered by late March (2013)), the October, November, and December (2012) sittings of the SAT are certain to be accepted. Sometimes the January (2013) sitting will be accepted, too. (e.g., Emma Watson took a January test for her Brown admission.) Check with the school of interest.
If you apply for the early cycle (early decision or early action, = applications due November 1 or November 15 (2012), decisions rendered by December 15 (2012)), the October (2012) sitting will certainly be accepted. The November (2012) sitting might also be accepted. Again, check with the school of interest.Last edited by Descartesz; 21-05-2012 at 18:14. -
Re: Is it too late too apply?wondered which university you are applying to!(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

Re: Is it too late too apply?None of the Ivy Leagues really, but I might change my mind if I get a good SAT score.(Original post by arvin_infinity)
wondered which university you are applying to!
But as it stand: John Hopkins University and University of Maryland and NYU
Anyone had any experience with these Uni's? -
Re: Is it too late too apply?I have looked at quite a few university and them 3 are v prestigious- in terms of teaching it all depends upon the degree you are applying to(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

Non of them are adivisable if you thinking of entering medical/dental schools afterwards.. -
Re: Is it too late too apply?Yeah, I'm definitely not. I intend to major in Political Science/ Economics(Original post by arvin_infinity)

The only thing is though, I'm worried I won't make the required SAT score for them. I don't really know what they require but for an A student at A level (80ish%) do you think it will go okay? SAT is apparently more of an IQ test than anything so I guess academics don't really matter than much.Last edited by Obscenedilemma; 22-05-2012 at 22:51. -

Looked all over the interwebs, doesn't make mention of her taking the SAT. I imagined she must have scored near to perfect, Brown is super hard to get into. She's really clever anyway 3 A's at A level. -

Note date of article.
Watson went to Brown and is still enrolled. She spent her junior (3rd year) "abroad" (relative to U.S.) at Oxford, a common option for many juniors. She has indicated she will be back at Brown to finish next year, but this remains to be seen.

I have never heard how she scored on the SAT but I imagine Brown gives her a lot of latitude.
BTW, of the three schools mentioned, Johns Hopkins is the most conventionally "prestigious" (Ivy-level, really) and is particularly well-known for its medical studies. The med school is one of the best in the world and the undergraduate pre-med program very strong, although by reputation also very competitive after admission. Baltimoron, who posts here on occasion, might have more to say about it. U of Maryland is a good public school which I am sure would provide good pre-med training, too. (I am, of course, ignoring the difficulties of obtaining UK medical licensing with a U.S. education, about which I know nothing,)Last edited by Descartesz; 23-05-2012 at 10:36. -

.
You seem like a MD (what with your DP) resident which is just what I needed.
Would you say that the Universities I've mentioned in my earlier posts are really hard to get into? Is it like the equivalent to Oxbridge in terms of how hard it is to get in?
Also what's the nightlife like? I here U. MD is notorious for its parties -
Re: Is it too late too apply?Yes, I am a MD resident. PM me for more info. I don't know what universities you mentioned earlier either. And yes, we throw some damn good parties. We're not a top 20 party school for nothing.(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

Re: Is it too late too apply?Don't go to UMD (I'm assuming College Park, right?). It's in the middle of the ghetto, seriously! The uni itself is not bad but the surrounding neighborhood is terrible.(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

At least go visit the campus if you're seriously thinking about it.
EDIT: Johns Hopkins is in a sh** location too, but at least the uni is worth itLast edited by chad_bro_chill; 24-05-2012 at 23:48. -
Re: Is it too late too apply?Yeah, I heard. Baltimore apparently has the highest crime rate in the states. But then again, I'm going there for the education mainly- surroundings have little priority. Both Uni's aren't that far from Bethesda-- a beautiful town with loads of companies, great for getting an internship.(Original post by chad_bro_chill)

UMD College Park is about 20-25 minutes away (maybe more during rush hour) and JH is a bit further, maybe 40-45 minutes. So you're planning on living in Bethesda then? -

I don't live in the DC community lol I live in London.
And I know about it 'cos of general knowledge. It's pretty well known for being one of the most affluent counties in the US. Also I know a friend of a friend who works at a bank there. I'm not sure if I plan on living there but I'm certainly not disregarding the idea.
I have a question, do both of the Uni's that I mentioned require super good grades like A* 's because I'm projected to get A's (A levels)Last edited by Obscenedilemma; 26-05-2012 at 21:01. -

Re: Is it too late too apply?I don't know, I'm not familiar with the UK A-level system. All 3 unis are pretty good but they're not cream of the crop, they're not going to require the same grades as the top 10 unis, but still need good grades. I think it depends on the program your applying to also.(Original post by Obscenedilemma)

Re: Is it too late too apply?Yeah that's what I thought too, I want to apply for a social science like Economics or Political Science. I'm also looking to get a needs based scholarship which I know is hard to get(Original post by chad_bro_chill)
