How do I tell my parents I'm depressed
I'm deeply depressed. I just don't feel like I can tell my parents though, as they feel ashamed, or think its their fault. Also my mum is quite old fashioned and doesn't really believe in therapy and thinks mental illnesses aren't as bad as people claim. At the moment no one really knows, the only people I talk to about it are the Samaritans, and whilst that is helpful having someone to talk to they obviously can only help me to a certain extent. I don't want to tell my friends either as they'll just call me an attention seeker. I just feel like I'm trapped and alone, what can I do?

Re: How do I tell my parents I'm depressed
if you feel depressed without any particular reason you should talk to your gp and he /she would refer you to the local mental health team in order to get a diagnosis. then you can discuss with them therapy options and during that therapy you can discuss how you can tell your family. i agree telling your family that you suffer from a mental health disorder can be extremly difficult. my family knows but i am still hiding the fact that i have been hospitalised. best of luck

Re: How do I tell my parents I'm depressedClinical depression isn't about what's upsetting you. If "depression" would go away if certain factors were removed from your life, then chances are you're just feeling down or fed up rather than being truly depressed. Clinical depression has no obvious cause, lasts for a long period of time, and doesn't just go away.(Original post by Anon420)
Why do you feel depressed, whats upsetting you in your life at the moment?
Anyway, OP. Tell your parents. Parents often blame themselves when their child gets depressed because they think it's something they've done wrong; but you need to explain that it can't be helped and that it's nothing that they've done. I don't know how they will take it, but chances are after they have had time to think about it they will be able to support you and everything will seem a lot better. One of the things that really helps with depression is just talking, and having someone to talk to whenever you need it can be hugely beneficial. -

Awwwww there there....
I think you should definitely talk to someone about it... but the question is who? Perhaps someone close to you... like another family member. OR If you are a religious person you should probably spend time praying and meditating. Also you can speak to the church priest about it(if you are a christian that is) - like in the confessional room...works for me.
TRy not to feel depressed. Try to divert that feeling by doing something you love constantly... something that allows you to escape from your miserable state ( i like gardening and cycling and love listening to ONE DIRECTION that gets me high) - maybe thats it - EAT LOADS OF CANDY TO KEEP YA HIGH -
Re: How do I tell my parents I'm depressedWhile I agree with talking about it, when someone's depressed 'trying to divert that feeling' really, really doesn't work, not on any real, long term basis anyway.(Original post by madaboutmambo)

Re: How do I tell my parents I'm depressedYou can't really dwindle depression down to a singular point in your life.(Original post by Anon420)

I suggest you go and see your GP who will more than likely refer you on to a specialist. It would be wise to seek help from professionals before opening up to your parents about a subject that could possibly cause more trouble in your life.
