OCR Latin Language AS 23rd May 2012
Just thought I'd start a thread because I hadn't see one yet.

Everyone looking forward to it? :P

Currently wondering how hard Section B will be this year, there's been a lot of controversy over the last few years because of it- one year being really difficult- (June 2010?) and last year's being quite straight forward (Y). It will also be interesting if it's another of Cicero's speeches.

Here's hoping for a good one!

We've been told that it's always Cicero in section B... But to be fair, we've spent a year studying his writing, so we should be getting pretty clued up on that 'complicated fellow', and how he loves being very wordy about things.

Yeah that's true - actually for our mock we did a part of in Verres I that was last year's paper, and it was pretty straight forward. We've done a lot of Pro Milone as translation practice- it would be really nice if it was that! :P My teacher reckons it might be one of his correspondences for a change, which might be good!

Sadly, unlike you, we haven't done much Cicero practice... But yes, the In Verrem extract from last year's paper was very straightforward - would be nice if it could be like that this year! We did translate a few of his Letters at some point, but it was a while back. We've just been busy developing strategies for tackling Cicero (like always breaking up the clauses at the conjunction 'ut', 'et' and whatnot, and not linking the sections until the end etc.) Unfortunately, the teacher who teaches us this bit of the course is on jury service!

    Seriously? Haha, that's really unlucky!
Ah yes that's a good strategy I reckon, it does really help for translation purposes with Cicero to break it down, definitely found that over the course of this year.
I tend to usually get the sense of the more complicated sentence structures, but lose marks on stupid things like cases and agreement- I really need to look out for that!

Although, case and agreement in Cicero isn't easy by far, despite the fact that I scored 100% in a cases test this year (which was bloody difficult - get given a word, name the possible declensions, cases and numbers)... I suppose knowing the endings is good, and just checking whether it makes sense when you've translated it. If it doesn't, then there's a big chance it's wrong. Although, this being Latin, the remaining chance that the author was just a nutter is quite high too :P

Yeah that's true actually, I've been working hard on trying to actually know ALL the endings and agreement endings properly this time, hopefully, as you say, it will make a difference! (So far in my latin career including GCSE I've managed to wing it quite well without ever knowing them properly- but I'm not counting on luc k anymore! :P)
And hahaha, so true, in my latin group, we've had many occasions where we've decided it couldn't possibly be something because it wouldn't have made any logical real life sense at all, but low and behold, oh yes it was that. And well done on your 100%, fair play!

You should have enough time to break the passages up and really understand the language. Before you write anything, read through the passage slowly and try to understand it. For any sentences that you don't understand, break them up into their individual components.

Haha, I'm sure you won't though! I know what you mean though, it can be really hard to fit it all together when it's a long sentence! Good luck!

I think it was OK - do you want to compare our translations of sections? That would be great if you can remember roughly what you put down.

Really hard - what did people get for the Cicero translation? What was that sentence about 'for he said openly that whilst it was not possible to seize the consulsip from Milo, it was possible to take away his life'?? Is that right?

I found it ok... some stupid words that I translated incorrectly, which I'm annoyed about, but overall it was fairly nice.

Section A was fine, but a few tricky bits in Section B!

I didn't fare too well on that sentence, but that sounds along the right lines.
EDIT - The actual unadapted text translates to: In truth he used to say undisguisedly that the consulship could not be taken from Milo, but that life could.

****, I've probably lost 4 marks in that sentence. I put something like "he used to say openly that Milo would not be able to sieze consulship if he was able to live" or some gibberish like that.
