I'm going to fail as level
Discussion for A-Level students and for those choosing their A-Level subjects.

Re: I'm going to fail as levelIf you get something like D's all the way, either continue with A2 and resit modules - so many people fix up in A2. If you get E/U grades, redo the year and put your best effort in.(Original post by superglow12)
do you consider that i should do my a levels again? -
Re: I'm going to fail as levelso you get predicted grades you apply to uni with from your AS results? I did not know that!!(Original post by TenOfThem)
You get your AS scores
Your teachers use those to decide your predicted grades
You will decide on universities to apply to depending on these predicted grades
You may or may not get offers based on these predicted grades
You would need to achieve the grades they state in the offer
Example
AS grades = ABCC
Predicted grades = ABB
Offer (firm)= ABB
Offer (insurance) = BCC
You get ABB and go to your first choice, you don't but you get BBC and you go to your second choice -
Re: I'm going to fail as levelIm really confused as to what time scale you're using/think you use to apply for uni.(Original post by kls23)
can't i just try my best in my A2 level and resit some of my AS subjects in year 13? will the uni still accept me with better A2 grades? i am sure that i have the ability to get AAB/ABB in A2 (year 13)
The unis will give you an offer based on your predicted grades for A2.
depending on your school policy, the teachers will take into account your AS grades and give a prediction for your A2s based on that. You then send off your uni application using your predicted grades.
you'll get your university offers a while before you even sit your A2 exams.
Without an offer, you cant get into uni based on your A2s unless you either go through clearing, or wait a year and apply with your A2 grades after leaving school.
So it goes:
Sit AS exams > get given predicted grades for A2 > apply for university with those predicated grades > get offers > sit A2 exams > see if you reach your offer or not. -

i know that i have to apply to uni using my as grades plus prediction grades, but how about if i improve my grades in A2? for example if my teacher predicts me a C and the uni i apply for will not accept a C but i end up getting a B in year 13 in a particular subject? do i just contact them and tell them i have a higher grade or how will they know? and will they still accept me? -
Re: I'm going to fail as levelThey wont know and probably wont care because they will have made all their offers and will only be interested in those people.(Original post by kls23)

The only way they would accept you is if the course was under filled for some reason and they had a few places left in clearing. But if you're applying for a fairly good uni/competitive course, the chances of that happening are very slim. -

ok thank you for the useful information
but one more thing... can someone actually NEVER get an offer? i mean even if conditional? i heard that most people get conditional offers when they have poor grades.

There are thousands of people who never get any offers. Universities are independent bodies, there's nothing to regulate the system so that everyone gets at least one offer, nor should there be.
If you apply to unis that want high grades you dont have, or if they just hate your personal statement etc, they wont give you an offer.
the people with poor grades only get conditional offers for poor universities that are desperate enough to give poor offers. <insert london met joke here> -

what are the lets say "medium" or "okay-ish" universities that you know?
i know the VERY good ones are like oxford, cardiff etc but what are the middle ones? that are not very good but not very poor either? -
Re: I'm going to fail as levelYou'd have to look at league tables for that.(Original post by kls23)

wait and see what you get at AS and ask your teachers what they will predict you. My school had a policy of never predicting you higher than your AS (cos A2 is harder), unless you had a good reason or SERIOUSLY put in work. check your school policy and apply to universities that match those grades.
You can maybe gamble with ONE uni that asks above your grade level, but don't risk too much. Universities are not your friends, they will take the best people they can, they wont go out of their way to do you a favor. -

You won't fail. This forum's a brill resource to get help, I love it. You're never 100% alone and I'm sure you'll dominate these exams. x

thank you very much
its much clearer now, my school sucks in explaining how AS and A2 work etc..
and btw yea our school do predict us ONE grade higher (thank god) and i THINK i have a good reason..1) i had some family problems before my exams and 2) im not from this country, i dont know how the system works here and the language sometimes tricks me even though i've lived here for 7 years. but once again thank you

I got EEDU at the end of my AS year

So what I've done was:
-Left 6form
-Got into self study
- Retook AS exam for that U
- Currently taking the A2 exams for all the others
Applied for a foundation degree (need 2Cs at A2), so should be fine.
It is risky, but hopefully it'll be worth it
You'd be better off retaking the year though.

Self study? How much did you pay?(Original post by CintiaMarina)

Im considering to do self study because going to 6form seems pointless :/ and I work better on my own, I had trouble this year since I had after school classes, so i'd usually get at home at 6ish or 5. That really affected my whole revision.
How do I do self study? Do I contact my school?

Yep, just left sixth form and studied at home; planned a timetable that'd suit me and just worked through it.(Original post by superglow12)

They cost me £250.
Yeah, I had issues with attendance, bcz of family circumstances, it seemed impossible to keep up with school, so took the shot this way.
What you have to do is to find a school where you can sit your exams at, book and pay them, and whilst that, just draw yourself a timetable, practice many exam papers and just prepare yourself at your pace.
The materials you'd need (books and past exam papers) you could either get them from your school colleagues or borrow from your local library.
However, if you could retake the year at another sixth form, you'd have access to all the resources for free, and not only that - your exams would be either free (because you've enrolled with them), or even if you had to pay, it would be the max of £20 per module.
So you've got two choices there:
Either go for self study, and manage that way OR retake the year and start afresh, and this time - try to manage things better.
Have you considered other courses, like an apprenticeship or a level 3 course, which are more practical and accepted by unis as well?
So you've got a few options there, so all you have to do is to balance the pros and cons and make your decision.
Let me know how you get on
