Why don't people drink?

Drink is funny, I think the world would be a better place without it to be frank, as long as it was replaced with something less harmful like weed. I wouldn't miss it.

I do enjoy wine, a couple of cold beers on a hot day, moderate, sociable, enjoyable.

I used to drink quite a lot at a work place with a big drink culture, but it was balanced by a very fitness orientated lifestyle. If nothing else, it improves your stamina...

I occasionally binge, not so that I'm completely monged, but I'm definitely pissed (placebo? Hahahaha, support that comment with some evidence you looney!).

But in the final analysis, I could go without quite happily.
I've been at university a year and I can count the number of times I've been drunk on one hand. When people are screaming "Down it down it", I just sigh and sip my drink that I've paid a fair bit of cash for. I don't really have a massive reason for not binge drinking. I just don't like it. I do like a few drinks but I'm happy to leave it at that. I don't get why there's a stigma attached to people who don't drink/drink very little.

We share the same view. It's just good times to look back on, and alcohol tends to make the night more eventful..you do things you usually wouldn't which most of the time for me is funny, and again something eventful to look back on. As you say, you just need to know how to handle your drink and what your limits are - and you'll be just fine. It irritates me that someone has disliked your post, most likely someone who will not listen to any pros a drinker has to say.

I've probably has as many decent nights as ****e and yet when you recollect these nights out on others, its something to talk about, laugh about.

I will quite happily admit that I like a drink but as I've experienced alcohol in varying states, and you probably have to, we can talk about the effects of alcohol. No none drinker can sit back and tell me, you, anyone about self control. Alcohol is a personal thing, and definitely when I'm out, I tell my mates "Hang on, slow down" if I notice they are getting too drunk, too quick. Bit of advice and people realise, my mates have said your drinking too quick and I've acknowledged it. Ultimately you've got to sensible and yeah sometimes, you get to the "Oh f**k it stage" and drink ridiculously. That's life, people 'need to let their hair down' sometimes, chill out, socialise and takes lots from it.

I haven't a problem if people don't like the taste of alcohol and I actually pity on those who drink it when they don't like the stuff, everyone has individual choices. Mine is to drink and I like the taste of my beer.

This. I was once convinced by my friends that a peach alcopop they bought me was just normal peach juice (I never drink fruit juice of any sort so I didn't recognise the taste of alcohol). I had about 4 of them, and they were full of vodka and whiskey, easily enough to get me slurring my speech and staggering. But since I didn't think they were alcoholic, I was barely drunk at all by the end of the night. Alcohol is a placebo, an adult male can have 6 or 7 drinks without any real effects so long as he is convinced that they will not effect him, and even very drunk people can be immediately sobered up when their brain realises they are not under the influence on a physiological level, for example if they are in some sort of danger. I only drink alcohol because I enjoy the taste of it, I wouldn't just drink alcohol because I was in an alcoholic setting.

I fully agree about the psychology of it. Me and mates usually arrange pub crawls/nights out a few weeks in advance but I guarantee, 9 times out of 10 as soon as I touch the first beer I don't feel as if I'm going to have many. Usually a lot of it is nerves, if I'm going out for 7-8 hours (sometimes as many as 12), I want to last that long and I don't eat much before it. I've then got to trick myself and convince myself I can drink more than I feel like and it does work, I don't often feel much different from a 2nd pint to the 7th. Sometimes I will drink ridiculously slow anyway to counter any negative thoughts over how much I can consume. Ultimately I go for a few beers to try something different (a new beer), I will not be seen in a pub chugging back pint after pint of lager because I don't see the point.

I have been served after 10 pints because I'm conning my mind into thinking I've not had many. I have NEVER been refused a drink or entry to anywhere on the grounds I'm too drunk. The day I am, I will stop drinking, at least for a few weeks.

A lot of people let the alcohol affect them more than necessary. I'd had a mate refused entry to a club (they took 1 look at his student I.D and turned him away) at 11:30pm one night, last train had gone 30 minutes before. Faced with 7+ hours on Manchester Piccadilly station, we sat down and we thought, hang on, we've been out since 1 this afternoon and don't feel that bad. Bought a bottle of whisky each and continued the session until the first train at 7am.

its embarrassing to get drunk because you just act like a idiot, i guess its ok if your with really close friends though, but i always cringe after ive been drunk

First line I don't agree with. You can be drunk without making yourself look stupid...

Reasons not to like drink

a) the taste
b) medical reasons
c) Family history of alcoholism
d) don't like not being in control

To like

a) relax's ya
b) more confident
c) more talkative
d) makes some people more interesting.

Overall, my view is drink is good in moderation. Most weekends I might get a little to drunk and cringe at my actions the next day. Does this put me off? Not really as I’m pretty sure everyone else was drunk, has been drunk and has did/done the odd silly thing due to the influence. My view is ya only live once so enjoy life and don’t dwell.

On another note does anyone else believe the following to be true.

‘if it takes drink to make you interesting, your a dull person’

Would you not be prefer to be seen as interesting when sober to, rather than return to the boring person you are without it?!

Was with one of my friends at the bar, (I arrived late and the lads he was with had, had a few pints) and one of his mates says to me ‘So do you change much when your drunk’ to which I responded ‘I’d like to think I don’t change to much’ (bar maybe becoming a little bit more chatty!) Apparently I just become a little bit more chatty thankfully. He then proceeded to telling me he had a whole bottle of vodka the previous night, thinking this was some sort of accomplishment! I just thought what a tube you are lad.

Don't agree in the slightest. When I wake up the next morning, and my memory is blurry depending on how much I drank, then yes I was drunk, very drunk. Alcohol is not a placebo, otherwise you wouldn't find people chatting absolute balls or acting different. Not everyone pretends to act in a certain way in order to gain credit.

I do cringe sometimes, but for the most part its funny, I guess some people don't like to go the extra mile to have a laugh.

I'm not a drinker because all of these alcohol tastes like COMPLETE CRAP. Why do people force themselves to drink this stuff just to get drunk if it doesnt even have a decent taste? Examples include carlsberg, jack daniels and guiness.. no thanks. I only enjoy those sweeter drinks like smirnoff ice and baileys.

I also hate carlsberg, jack daniels and guinness...however I do like other brands? Thats just taste preference.
I have never ever touched alcohol and intend to stay that way. Even when I go to uni you will not find me hammered like most other students in a bar. If people need to drink in order to have a "good time" then they are very uncreative and not trying hard enough.

I do not understand why people would drink alcohol -_-. It is basically a toxin.

Why would anyone want to ingest something which will potentially kill them?

Would you eat arsenic?

Yeah I think all of us could go happily without it, bar the alcoholics haha. Yeah good point about weed, more fuss is made over cannabis than alcohol, yet the effects of cannabis are far less dangerous than alcohol.
I actually just don't like the taste of it. It's definitely acquired. Was brought up muslim so never drank until recently and maybe it's because I'm not used it. But I hate the taste. Don't like wine, spirits, beer eugh... I'd rather much have the juice bit of cocktails without the alcohol, tastes much much nicer.

Yeah exactly, you can control yourself, its whether you want or not. Similarly when my friends are drinking too much or vice versa, we acknowledge it and say keep an eye on how much your having, depending on the situation. However, most nights out we don't say that because the whole point is to let our hair down, and we aren't aiming to cause a ruckus we just know we will enjoy ourselves. We could do something else, but we choose to drink because its fun! I mean shots, I don't know anyone who likes them, but its something about doing them collectively which makes it a laugh and also because they get you drunk. I personally love the tastes of whiskey vodka gin rum etc mixers, but also love the taste of certain beers such as millers fosters stella. Thats what I like about alcohol, theres so much variety depending on the environment.

An answer to your question, I don't think it makes you a dull person no, obviously you have that personality somewhere within but obviously a bit too shy when sober to show it. However when I'm wasted, people always comment that as a person I'm not that much more different, just a bit more active fun chatty etc. I also think that different situations bring out different parts of your personality, chilling out with your friends might show your relaxed easy going side, but going out drinking may show your fun exciting side. Get the gist?

Thats just over the top, yes technically its a poison/toxin whatever people want to call it. That word just gives alcohol negative connotations, people eating too much McDonalds could 'potentially kill them.' Most grandparents have been drinking since they were much younger than us, yet they are still alive? Well most of them anyway, if not I'm sure they lived to a healthy age.

It takes time to get used to alcohol, so yeah I agree its an acquired taste. When I first drank I didn't get what the fuss was about, then after time with a bit more experimenting I learnt what was nice and what wasn't.

I hate the taste of alcopops, but some alcohol is extremely good tasting even for someone not used to it. Alcohol is like spicy food: yes it takes a bit of getting used to and can seem at first to overpower your taste buds, but it's worth spending some time and money acquiring the taste, because once you have got over the initial shock of throat-burning, drinks like Scotch whisky are a taste that is just not found in anything else. I agree there's no point in drinking alcohol if you're just going to drink bacardi breezers and cocktails, when you could just as well have two shots of vodka and then fruit juice for the rest of the night.

I'm not denying the alcohol has any effect at all, I'm just saying it is not necessary to get drunk to lose your inhibitions. I disagree that people wouldn't act differently without alcohol, the atmosphere of a club with the loud music and darkness can easily provoke different behaviour on its own, it sends you into a state of sensory deprivation which has been shown scientifically to alter your mind. Deep meditation in darkness and total silence has been known to provoke hallucinations and hyperawareness on par with strong cannabis.

True I see your point, different environments cause different behaviour. Makes sense.

Yeah but you know what I mean, like stuff like smirnoff is purposely sweet and called an alcopop apparently, I dunno I aint a drinker. And I don't think someone is meant to get drunk off of baileys.

Yes that is because alcohol is a "negative" thing. Are you trying to say that it is good? And on the matter of Mcdonalds- the food does not contain any harmful substances (maybe the trans fats) or poisons so this part of the argument is not valid. Consuming too much of anything is fatal: even water.

My grandfather drinks occasionally too and yes he is still alive but he will be dead soon. Whenever did I say when one touches alcohol they drop dead instantly? It just has an overall long-term impact on a person's health.

I am directly talking about the rationality of consuming something which is known to be toxic. Look at all the crime and deaths alcohol causes. It definitely is not a good thing.

I do I do, got to experiment though! Something, for everyone! Yeah I think baileys is nasty haha, I don't think on its own because that would be so sickly.
