Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?Paris has had quite a few riots without immigrants, it has a very revolutionary history.(Original post by silver9)
Yes immigration should be completely halted. If there is one lesson to be learned from France it is that mass immigration destroys countries. Take a look at Paris and the riots that have gone on there -
Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?
True, but these previous revolutionary riots are not neccessarily connected with the new riots. The new riots may be more strongly related to immigrant's feelings of marginalisation and France's lack of acceptance of its immigrant population. Either way Paris is a mess now as a result of immigration-it was once one of the nicest cities in Europe. Mass unselective immigration is one of the best ways to trash a city or a country. IMO the UK govt should close its borders, deport all illegal immigrants (why should they be here illegally??) and then deport any immigrants who have been living off benefits for more than 3 months. After this net immigration should be reduced to 0 and immigrants should be carefully and strictly filtered. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I think Human Rights is starting to become so all-encompassing that it is beginning to infringe upon the human rights of British natives.

Re: Should we stop immigration altogether? We need as much immigration as possible, especially really diverse and multicultural people from the third world, so that we don't have to travel to experience a little of what their country is like. This saves on air travel and will help with global warming(Original post by emkayheych)
The past few years have sparked debate about whether immigration in the UK should be stopped, due to lack of jobs etc.
What does anyone think?
Also, I know millions of people are unemployed here today, but none of them have the skills to become a farm hand or work in restaurants, and these gaps can only be filled by immigrants. -
Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?
I support the UKIP view - a freeze for five years whilst we sort out more rigorous controls, try to get back on our feet etc, get rid of any failed asylum seekers or illegal immigrants, and then after that we only let through migrants who are skilled in the areas we have a requirement for - if we need plumbers, let through plumbers, until we don't have a shortage and then we don't let any more in.
Also, with regards to asylum seekers, if they've passed through or by any safe countries on their way here, should be turned away. -
Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?Sorry, but sorting out the country's financial problems is a little more important than getting people to see what foreign people look like without them having to travel anywhere. There are books and tv shows for that kind of thing.(Original post by NB_ide)

And as for restaurants, I worked in a restaurant and I'm not an immigrant

Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?...no, controlling it better isn't 'one thing', it is a must. 'Chosing' the wrong migrants can harm the country, mainly via crime. The economy could be on the rise if the pick and chose process was better, instead we have a government who lets people in from congo who believe in witchcraft and murder children who they believe are possessed. Why not just limit it to people who have useful careers/plenty of money to sustain themselves?(Original post by Tommyjw)
If anyone actually suggests stopping immigration then they deserve a slap. Limiting it, controlling it better etc is one thing, stopping it is just stupid
I hope you are joking with your first idea, i have never heard such a ridiculous pro-immigration argument. And restaurants? That was the first place I started work when I had no work experience - it was tough for the first 1 or 2 weeks then it was plain sailing. There are no 'skills' required to be a waiter... You are taking orders and carrying stuff. Maybe a short adjustment period if you've never done it before like with me, but that's it. Same with many other simple jobs.(Original post by NB_ide)

Re: Should we stop immigration altogether?
and i wonder what would happen to the British-born youth who can't get jobs or training? Oh wait, they're lazy and immigrants are 'hard-working and 'vibrant''.
Middle-class journalists are more concerned with having an 'exciting' new foreign cafe or the 'thrill' of hearing other languages in their streets, than having the basic mechanics of society functioning properly. -
Re: Should we stop immigration altogether? Not that old chestnut. Most immigrants are no more hard-working, if at all, than the majority of British workers.(Original post by Bubblyminty)
No I think immigration should be enouraged.
This way we get a more multiculturual scoiety. We will get skills froom a much larger pool and all sorts of foods, music etc.
I hate it when people complain about "damn immigrants stealing their jobs". We recently had a builder who said that polish workers were rubbish and make a mess of the job, but the funny thing is that he has now ruined our house and left the job when we complained. He cut so many corners and barely turned up for work most mornings.
I find immigrants are usually more willing to do ork and less lazy. They do work hard.
Multiculturalism doesn't work. Never has, never will.
