How would one get into journalism?
    Hello!

I've recently come to the conclusion that I would like to try my hand at journalism, and I'm thinking of writing for the university newspaper in the next academic year.

However, I don't really know where to start, what would you recommend I do to train my journalistic style?

    Thanks

One doesn't simply get into journalism.

Just enquire about writing for them; most university newspapers will always be keen to take on more writers!

You'll probably find yourself knowing more about how to write than you think - if you've read the publication regularly you'll probably find that you already know a lot about the style.

I must add though you can't just decide to be a journalist, if you decide it's a career you want to get into you'll have to look at loads of other work experience options and think about an NCTJ accredited course when you leave!

Good luck though! If you have any other questions feel free!

I had to rep you for this.

OP, write a lot for your student paper, and anything else you can get your hands on. Do work experience stints in the holidays, and possibly a masters course in journalism at somewhere like City or Cardiff (although this is by means essential).

Of course, professional journalism might well be dying out anyway...so, you'll have to take your chances with that one.

I think aspiring modern-day journalists are best of with a niche that they're interested in, and writing for that.

If you're interested in cars, write for an automotive site, if you're interested in technology; write for a tech news site.

Niche-serving news sites are often keen to hire students, even if it's just freelance work. This will get you the experience that's more important than anything else (other than an interest) to be honest - from there you can worry about writing for The Times or the BBC or whatever.

    EDIT:
I'm on the freelance list of a leading news site such as above, just for tapping out an email and a couple of sample articles. I don't even intend to have a career in journalism, I'm just interested in the subject-area and fancied writing about it for a few quid now and then

Unfortunately I can't see the picture you posted! Hmm, I think I'll write as much as I can for the uni magazine next year then.

How easy is it to get onto a masters course for journalism? Would I be able to move to that after my Psychology degree?
