Bankside House 2012 Thread
Hey everyone,
I'm at Bankside this year and am staying on again next year, because I'm changing courses. Thought I'd create a thread for those of you considering living here next year.
I've noticed a lot of people are leaning towards Rosebury and Passfield becasue they are more social, but I've found Bankside very social too this year and wouldn't want to live anywhere else! Rosebury and Passfield are great halls too, but the facilities and location of Bankside are unrivalled in my opinion.
Location - right on the centre of the South Bank, directly behind the Tate Modern. Southwark, London Bridge, Borough, and Waterloo stations are all within walking distance. The Millenium Bridge is also about a 2 minute walk away. Not to mention all of the restaurants, pubs, and theatres in the area.
Social life - Ministry of Sound is about a 15 minute walk away. There are lots of bars and pubs in the area too, but they are slightly expensive because of all the tourist attractions. However that doesn't stop us from having a good time and I've gone out to a lot of different places of the year, whether in Leicester Square, Camden, Mayfair, or Shoreditch. In London everywhere is easy to get to by public transport, and often taxis can work out cheaper than taking the tube if you fill them up.
Facilities - Bankside is the only LSE hall to have an operational bar, and this really is great. The staff are friendly and drinks reasonably price. There are two pool tables there, and a table football too, all free to use. There is also a TV lounge with a huge HD projector screen, and Xbox 360 hooked up for residents to use. Also, 50% of residents get their own ensuite, and if you don't you only share with one other person which is quite good.
The committee - we have a social committee who organise events over the year too and this helps too. During freshers they told us about club nights we could go to, and organised pre-drink sessions, as well as things like tours of the area, a trip to the local Nandos where we all get 50% off our meal etc, and even a casino night in the Banside Bar. We have a boat party coming up too after exams - they've told us there is a mystery celebrity coming too... have on idea who!
Anyway, hopefully that is helpful. Feel free to ask any questions you have about life at Bankside too, and I will do my best to answer.

Re: Bankside House 2012 Thread
I'm trying to decide on my first choice for accommodation, most likely between Bankside and High Holborn. Would you have any idea of the room size compared to other LSE halls? And I heard there was renovation work going on a year or two ago, has that been finished?
Helpful thread already, great idea to post

bumping and adding another 3 questions:
1. did you guys had any email/letter from accommodation office confirming the exact room rate and type?
2. is there internet access in study bedrooms at bankside (they only write about the school network)?
3. how is the food (dinner and brunch) at bankside? and kitchen access? -
No(Original post by etna123)

Re: Bankside House 2012 Thread
Hi! I'll be residing at Bankside this coming year as well.
Because our contracts are all catered, I was wondering what the situation is like with the kitchens .
I know that this is what it says on the website:
"Kitchens are now limited to a maximum of 7 students per kitchen. However, our larger kitchens can have up to 11, residents will need to apply for a kitchen space. The contract for the kitchens will be for one year and applications must be sent to the accommodation office. Prices on application."
I was wondering how and when we apply? Can this only be sorted out once we arrive?
