I have to say I didnt even know that Kings did creative courses!

Its certainly not something they are well known for, more science/medicine/law tyope subjects. Goldsmiths on the other hand is very well known and regarded for creative subjects, someone else may know more about Kings than me but in all my research (Im starting fine art in Sept) Kings never even appeared on my radar.

Hi Mauro,

Goldsmiths certainly has a good reputation for its creative courses, however, having been to the university I assume you may want to take other factors into consideration. Kings College London overall has an outstanding reputation worldwide and is well known as a great university.

Goldsmiths does not have a reputation as good as KCL and it is alot smaller. When I attended Goldsmiths earlier this year, it did not feel like a university to me, but more like a small college. The facilities were average and the location wasnt very nice. There was a very small number of societies available and the ones that were available were very politically motivated. I did not enjoy my experience there and ended up dropping out. This is my personal opinion however and I do not wish to feed you false facts, this is how I personally felt. Since you're asking for advice, I would say if Kings College offers the creative course you wish to do then you should choose KCL.

Hope this helps,

KJ.

I see! But what did you study? Why the location isn't nice? It`s a Dangerous zone?

Actually I´m looking for a good way to make my creativity profitable, looking in the contents of the programs I found that KCL is more theorethical and Goldsmiths is more pragmatic!

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Hiya, I live not that far from Goldsmiths and to be honest its no more dangerous than any other area of london (Ive known more people who've had their pockets picked in central london) - like any city, anywhere, its just about being street smart (sticking to main roads, looking confident, dont flash around expensive phone etc,).

i know loads of people who love Goldsmiths.

good luck

New Cross is a ****hole, I have no idea what motivated them to build a university there :lolwut: The part where Goldsmiths is isn't particularly dangerous, though once you start moving towards Peckham it gets rougher. It is ugly and boring though- there's only one nightclub in New Cross and it's ****. I know Goldsmiths has a good rep for art-related courses since Damien Hurst went there, but KCL has a way better reputation plus the location is so so so much better. I'd pick KCL.

(I live in New Cross Gate and go to KCL).

It seems you are hearing a lot from fans of Kings - be good to hear directly from any art/design students at Kings; because for that course I have to say I’ve never seen anybody post anything up - maybe check out the threads that are specifically about choosing where to go for graphic design/illustration and ask the question if anyone had considered Kings.

The quality of the course is a very important factor in deciding where to go - honestly; clubbing in London, it doesn’t matter where you are everyone goes central and busses run all night. Area? You’d be very unlikely to live near the Kings Strand site as it would cost a fortune, my guess is most people live further out and travel in anyway.

Facilities, I can say that the art/design facilities at Goldsmiths are among the best in London - they have every possible workshop and the building where the studios are is beautiful - the studios are big and light filled.

The Goldsmiths buildings are lovely (a mixture of beautiful old buildings and sparkling new ones) and there is a real campus feel to the place.

Though I don’t place too much weight on league tables, Goldsmiths is 8th for Art and Design yet I can’t even see kings on the Guardian league table - http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2012/may/22/university-guide-art-design

(never thought Id find myself sticking up for Goldsmiths cause I didnt even get an interview!!)

What specific course are you going to be studying? This matters quite a lot when giving an opinion on a university

Yeah, what course are you going to do? KCL doesn't do Art, it doesn't even do Drama. The closest you get to creative industries at undergraduate level seems to be Film Studies. I dropped out of KCL last year for a variety of reasons, and this year applied to Goldsmiths, Leeds and some London drama schools. KCL didn't work for me because I was on the wrong degree (Hispanic Studies) and didn't like the atmosphere, it was dog-eat-dog competitive and central London is such a hard place to be creative in and relax in, for me anyway. The Strand campus is gorgeous and beautiful, but not hugely student friendly, and is a good walk from the library. There's not really anywhere to chill out and socialise near the Strand, and I felt stressed, lost and upset. This was just me though, I'm a silly northern provincial girl. However, Goldsmiths is completely different- you forget you're in London at all, and you're enveloped into this beautifully chilled out creative bubble in New Cross. I absolutely love the area and the university, it just didn't offer enough flexibility in the course options and Leeds was more practical. I still might change my mind though! Goldsmiths is a great place to meet potential collaborators and is very highly respected in the creative industries such as art, media and communications, anthropology, performance studies and creative computing. I just wish their drama course was a bit more practical, and I'd have no decision to make. New Cross is so close to London Bridge it's unreal and living prices aren't as mental as North of the river.
Hope this has helped xxxx

P.S. Just looked at the websites v. quickly, I assume you're doing an MA in Creative Industries? I don't know much about MA stuff because I don't have a BA yet, but if you've got into KCL for an MA, I'd go for that tbh.

Hi Mauro, I guess it all comes down to your personality. Which one you would like better comes down to perspective. For me the atmosphere and liveliness of Kings College was epic compared to Goldsmiths. I found Goldsmiths to be populated with only one particular kind of crowd where as Kings has a mixture of all kinds of people. That isnt a surprise however as Goldsmiths does focus on its arty sides. I wouldnt say the area is dangerous, however, its not the most pleasant area. Inside the uni there is a nice field and a new renovated building where some lectures are held.

In my 'personal' opinion, league tables are absolute trash in 'some' cases. The reputation of a uni is based on the uni in general, and saying you completed an MA at Kings College London is something that sounds impressive and will stand out on your resume. It is a University of London, (so is Goldsmiths) but it is also apart of the Russel Group.

I understand the academic side of uni is important, however, I assume you would want to feel good in the place you study and be able to have fun also. Goldsmiths had absolutely no freshers events or non political based societies apart from the odd sports team. It is also a very small university so has very few people in comparison to normal universities.

This is my personal opinion remember... The decision is down to you, Goldsmiths is a reputable uni for art/creative courses, Kings is reputable full stop.
