    Selling the Olympic Torch
So... I've been given the honour of carrying the Olympic Flame next week!

I'm not sure if anyone's been watching Ebay recently but there has been about 20 torches already in auctions on the website, reaching some auction prices of over £100,000!

I'm not from a well off family and we're always short of cash, what does everyone think of selling the torch, is it worth it with uni coming up in a year or two?

Please tell me what you think as I know there'll be people who are completely against it as it's so special, but I can tell you £100,000 is a lot more than I value the torch.

    Thanks in advance,
    Matthew

How can you sell the Olympic Torch? O.o Do you get to keep one after you carry it?

Edit: They're going for much much less than £100,000. Try £5000

I think the people with 'Buy It Now' prices of £100k or more are being a little optimistic. However I wouldn't be surprised if they went for 10k looking at how some of the auctions are going. There was one kid I saw on the news earlier who was selling his and donating all the money to charity. Maybe if you did sell yours you could donate a percentage to charity as a way of making the guilt a little easier.

I am sure all the auctions are scams.

How can you sell the torch?!

I would never sell the torch, even if you're not well off.

It's a god damn Olympic torch, a piece of history.

If you honestly think one sold for £100k you need your head examiend, they were scam bids.

They will generate money, ofc, but if you're that hard up can you afford the £400 to buy the thing in the first place?

I think the OP means sell their part of carrying the torch. Like, instead of them carrying it, they sell it to someone and then that person carries it instead.

    EDIT-

    Okay, I got it wrong

I'm sure I've read somewhere that all bids over £20,000 need to be verified by their bank before it goes up. I was watching the first one on there last night going up by the thousand every second and I felt sick!

Every one of the 8000 bearers has the chance to keep their own torch. They cost £205 for most people but because Coca-Cola are sponsoring me through it they're paying for it for me

I didn't realise until I saw it in the news that each bearer has one. They are given the option to buy it at £205 after they've used it. What they do with it is then up to them.

Are you sure the condition of them paying it for you doesn't mean it's then their (Coca Cola's) property?

Just keep it man. You might not want it now, but whenever you're older, and a bit more sentimental, I think you'd really really regret selling it.

At least three were over £100,000 yesterday. Anyway if you have the £200 I'd buy it and sell it, obviously do it asap as there's going to be 8000 in total, so it will be flooded soon.

I'm sure. They're doing loads for all their torchbearers, they've given everyone tickets to go see music events, celebration packs, meeting celebrities, buying the torch, given away loads of memorabilia and a free bottle of coke!

    This.

They are not scammed bids, you need persuade eBay that your bank account is linked to eBay when making bids for the torch.

So are you confirming that they are legitimate bids?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nk...&LH_Complete=1

As you can see, one sold for 110k - but that's going to be timewasters.

The next highest sold is 4744, then 3250.

So, I don't think it's worth selling it.

And if you sell in the future, there'll be more supply, hence lower prices - although these will be relatively small drops because of the inelastic supply
