What do you think of my choices?
    Hey guys,

So I am in year 9 currently and recently everybody in the year selected their GCSE options for year 10 to 11. I myself decided to choose good 'solid' subjects but I had the choice to take cooking, woodwork, photography, textiles, Physical Education and many other practical subjects.

However, thinking what I thought, I decided to take Geography, History, Triple Science and French. In my mind there is a part of me that wishes I did take 1 practical lesson such as PE but it doesn't really matter what I wish now.

Overall, I think I am pretty happy with my subjects but I am worried that I have made to much work for myself. Would you lot say I have chosen good subjects or do you think I have basically chosen subjects to demanding. I also had to take English, Maths, RE and a few others I cannot remember. I think it helps that I actually do quite well in all of these subjects. So what do you think?

I'd imagine you'd be fine, as long as you keep on top of the work throughout the two years, as with anything. With GCSEs it really is about work ethic.

Also, please don't fall in to the trap of classing PE as an 'easier' practical subject. PE includes a lot of biology, and the theory is a massively significant part of the course. I had a lot of friends who took PE GCSE when I was at school expecting it to be a doss lesson because they were quite sporty, but found that the amount of science they had to know was astonishing.

With GCSEs, I personally think you need to go for subjects that you are going to enjoy and do well in, and that should be a 50/50 split decision. Both factors are very important.

Oh I know that about PE. A lot is about learning all the names of muscles and I am sure it is actually very science based.

Would you say I chose the right subjects?

I can't say hun, I don't know you! It depends on what sort of grades you're predicted, what you enjoy, what you are thinking of doing in the future (if you have any idea at all, which I certainly didn't at your age!), a whole load of other things.

    I guess so. Thanks though!

Good choices, all valued and worthwhile GCSE's because they're exactly what I did

I think they're good choices as well. I'm doing my GCSE exams at the moment and three of my options: triple science, French and history are the same as yours. I think it's better that you decided not to do practical subjects to be honest.

Sounds pretty good to me. Having a practical subject is sometimes OK (I do drama, and it's nice to have a more relaxed lesson), but I don't enjoy it as much as I do geography and history, so I don't put much effort into it. I reckon, as long as you've picked ones that you like or get you onto sixth form courses/ careers that you want to do, then you'll be fine, and you it won't matter about whether you have practical subjects, because you'll see the options subjects as fun anyway.

I did two practical subjects at GCSE and found that these required a LOT more of my own time, to the point that I couldn't actually start revising until the start ofmy exams while everybody else started months before. I think your options are fine, and I think you will find you don't have as much work than if you had taken more practical subjects.
