    Kindle questions?
Probably going to get a Kindle next week, got Calibre set up with some books.

I was looking at the normal none touch one, states the battery is a month (obviously not 24/7), but they've now changed the page to based on 30 mins use a day. So is the battery really only 15 hours worth? I thought it was much more as e-ink doesn't use any battery well static on a page?

    Thanks.

It is around a months worth depending on how often you change the pages - I've got mine sat next to me and the charge last around that long if I don't leave the wifi on when it is not needed and have the text size small enough to fit a decent amount of text on each page.
With the wifi off the pages don't use any power (its a bistable thing) but after around 10 minutes it will go onto standby and change itself to a screen saver. Only real difference from the screen saver to normal use is the buttons are deactivated.

Mine has a dozen work/academic books/papers on it, pdfs are fine but you need to get used to zooming in and setting things to landscape to get the most out of it. That's my excuse for having it and the boss hasn't twigged yet...

Managing collections isn't as easy as it could be on the K4 and the Calibre system for collections isn't great but if you have good wifi connection leave everything in the cloud and just load what you want when you want it.

Word about Calibre, it's worth setting up the import options to strip the DRM from amazon .azw files when you import them, makes them a bit more open. If you want to try it there's a guide here.

Thanks, what sort of battery do you get realistically? Maybe page wise or compared to a book? 15hours reading time is too low for me is all I'm thinking.

I've got 35 books in Calibre so far ready to transfer. I'm not looking to read loads initially, but when I was younger I used to read so constantly and it died off, the last novel I read was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on release in 2007, and then in 2009 an autobiography and frankly I'm disappointed with myself and my spelling is starting to slip, I'm hoping a kindle will make it more accessible and I'll get back into it.

I think you're probably looking at around 1000 page turns with wifi off. I managed two and a bit "normal" sized books before recharging. It also doesn't take very long to charge, plug it into a USB port or a USB power supply (my iPhone one does me quite nicely if I haven't got the official one) and it's mostly done in around 2 hours.

Lots of free books around if you want to stay legal, almost everything if you don't object to piracy, but of course we'd never dream of that 8)

I've got a couple of weeks off and plan to read a lot so I'll see if I can figure out just how many page turns a battery charge lasts for

I hardly ever charge mine, and when I use it, I abuse it as in as soon as I start a book, I read it constantly until it's finished. I read the whole 3 Hunger Games books in 3 or 4 days and didn't lose much battery. I would say it's definitely longer than 15 hours. I couldn't tell you how many page turns though, but I like my text one larger than what it was at default, so I have to turn pages quite a lot (I read faster and enjoy the book more when there are less words on the page, strange )

I love mine though, one of the best things I bought, my bookshelf was just so rammed and it was costing me a fortune when spending at least a tenner on every book and having to wait a week for it to be delivered and then reading it in a day. The Kindle has made my reading experience much better, and I actually read a lot more now I have it, I read as much as I've always wanted to read, instead of feeling limited

Are you looking at the Kindle Touch or the older non-touchscreen one? I would imagine the former will have a considerably shortened battery life.

The none touchscreen one, it's not older though, it was released at the same time, it does have half the battery though, but it says 1 month instead of 2. I dispise touch screens though so really don't want it.

I rang the shop earlier though and they said the price has gone up, still going to check tomorrow, otherwise might get a Kobo touch instead.

    Gone for a Kobo Touch.

Was going to get the kindle as Argos clearance had refurbs of them for £59.99 (were £53.99 at one point), but my dad went to day and the price is now £69.99 which is quite a lot for a refurb, and I didn't want to £90 for a new one either.

Watched some reviews of the kobo touch when it was £110 vs the Kindle at £90 and it was coming up pretty good against it, and I found a deal on the Kobo for £53.99 plus 7% cashback which if tracks will make it just £50.20 which is great, sure it will be good for my needs.

I believe the figure is about 3,000 page turns for the "1 month" version and 6,000 for the two months based on independent tests.
Amazons figures are based on 30 minutes a day, 20 seconds per page which is about right if you have it at default text size. You could easily get it to last for 30 hours if you don't mind or like smaller fonts size.

I don't know about Kindle but my Sony prs 650 battery lasts for about one week with 1,5-2 hours per day. However Sony claimed that battery can live for 1 month either , so i guess this is an exaggeration . But in general these e-readers got really good batter life, at least better than all other electronic gadgets.
