Re: Would you ever claim benefits?no offence but you sound (other threads) like you've got a few assets to live off between jobs and wouldn't be instantly destitute if your employer collapsed.(Original post by Herr)
Never been on any sort of welfare nor had I ever had a student loan.
When I was out of a fulltime job during the height of the recession (granted it was my own doing there was a voluntary headcount reduction and the payout was rather generous) it never occurred to me that I should go to the JCP to ask for a job or fill out forms for benefits..... wouldn't had qualified anyway.
In my lifetime my parents never quite took any benefits either, for starters we never lived in UK or EU so no Child Benefit payments
In any case they would have scorned at the thought of it.
Higher education, first degree I had an athletic scholarship that covered for almost everything and since it was an American university and I had no rights to any financial aid my parents paid out what was stated in the i20 since it was their dream to have a child graduate from an American uni, well since it was their dream they should pay for it too.
2nd degree, wasn't eligible for UK or EU student funding due to the long absence from UK, thankfully received a few waivers and essentially paid around 2k for fees. Living expenses were on my own as I already had a fulltime job and I just continued with that.
If I was jobless again I still wouldn't go on welfare, the shame of it is just too much for me to bear.
Imo there's nothing wrong with using them for the intended purpose, a safety net for the vulneable.
I was wondering if cameron and osbourne signed on in their summer vacations before someone else mentioned the old system where university was seen as more of a middle class perk than it is now. -
Re: Would you ever claim benefits?
I highly doubt I would. I don't see a future in which I'm doing that because I genuinely don't want to. The reason for this that I'm the only one in my family of six who isn't a tax payer so I've grown up hearing negative things about benefits.

Re: Would you ever claim benefits?
It'd be a tad hypocritical to say no while I'm being given the maximum student loan plus grants and bursaries on top of that.
But honestly I want to be able to maintain a decent standard of living for myself and any others I may be supporting if that means taking some money off the state to do that I will. Although I should probably clarify that I've worked most of my teenage/adult life and have no intention of suddenly stopping and living of benefits before I get jumped by the right wing brigade.Last edited by Carecup; 21-05-2012 at 14:31. -
Re: Would you ever claim benefits?
Have had to in the past.Although it was around 13 years ago now and my husband found himself temporarily out of work.I must admit that it was so humiliating and neither of us liked it.Hubby was on JSA for a few months but thankfully he found a job.It was never a case of whether or not to go on them, we had no choice and had 2 children to keep.I honestly dont know how people ( who are more than capable of working) can stay on them for their whole life!.It's no way to live and certainly not a good example to your children.

Re: Would you ever claim benefits?
It's hilarious people claim to have morals that stop them from claiming benefits. It's not stealing, it's a system designed to support certain people. If you're in that group, then why would you not claim? That just seems stupid to me really, deliberately disadvantaging yourself because of your weird morals. I bet, for example, many of these people would then criticise religious people that disadvantage themselves due to their morals and beliefs.
