Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLLWe are the quiet majority.(Original post by Manitude)
I'm actually very surprised that 70% of the TSR users on this poll are in favour of the monarchy, from reading posts I would have though Royalists would be in a minority.
The minority make their points by making more noise than anyone else in a futile attempt to seem important. -

Come on this is the STUDENT ROOM. How can so many people be so stupid?
Why would you support giving power to somebody for absolutely no reason other than the fact that they happen to have popped out of the previous queen's vagina? -
Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLLRubbish. I don't consider someone who meets with the PM every week and has the power to choose the government (she let Harold Wison try and form a coalition government in 1974 despite him losing the election) to have very little power.(Original post by Cannotbelieveit)
When it boils down to it, the Prime Minister is pretty much our Head of State, the Queen has very little power left. -
Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLLIn reality, if the queen did something like refuse to grant royal assent to a law, she would be kicked out pretty swiftly.(Original post by DaveSmith99)

Since this hasn't happened since the days of Queen Anne in the 1700s I don't think it is much of a problem.
I don't see that she really does anything to warrant being removed from her position. -
Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLLIt would seem that way. Those of us who are content with the system don't really feel the need to shout about how OK things are I guess!(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)

Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLLDo you really think it would be that simple to kick out the queen? Also Prince Charles has already said that he wants to be a more powerful and more hands on Monarch that his mother, do you think this is a good thing? Also why would she be removed for not giving assent but not removed for giving permission to a losing candidate to form a government?(Original post by Aspiringlawstudent)

This system might not be perfect, but it beats the hell out of anything that might come after. -

Re: Are you a royalist or a republican? POLL
I don't really mind the royal family at all tbh. They don't hurt us and I think they do some good for us. I don't really understand a lot of the hate towards them, I think its mostly jealously and misconceptions (like how the whole royal family gets money from the state, they don't, only the queen does and she actually has a job plus we only give her money because we get the money from her lands which is more than what we pay her). The queen actually works hard to help our relations with other countries and to many British people still the royal family is a symbol of hope. I think the royal family serve us more than we serve them. The queen has a huge responsibility to make us look good and she has handle this very well and hopefully the future monarchs will too. I'm not a royalist though, as I don't particularly love the royal family nor do I actually follow them that closely but at the end of the day, they do no harm and I have no desire to get rid of them.
