Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
Yup, my dad has always been very upfront about it so that we would never worry about them paying bills/our school fees.
He's been retired for the last 7 years, but i still know exactly how much he sold his company shares for, how much his state and private pension is, how much my mum earns and how much they will give me to buy a flat.
i hope to bring up my kids in the same way - i think everyone always aims to earn more than their parents.Last edited by RubyShoes; 22-05-2012 at 01:20. -
Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
no idea. my mums a teacher so shes not on fantastic money and my dads a structural engineer, he does inspections on big companys, no idea how much it is that he earns though. i have never really felt a need to know tbh and theyve never needed to tell me,as i get a bursary rather than a student loan so didnt even need to know for uni purposes. though if i asked they would probably tell me, i just dont feel its any of my business really.
though its always been thought that he earns more than she does as he's mentioned it on a few occasions that there is an assuption there from my mum, though this is often mentioned when he's had a few to drink so i tend to ignore it (think there has always been some assumption he is a bit better off than she is as he spends a bit more on us for birthdays and has helped both me and my sister out a lot with money and getting us set up in our houses when weve moved out). neither my mums household or my dads household is fantastically well off though, just comfortable, and we never had a massive amount of money growing up so i know they dont earn a fortune, just enough to get by. -

Yes. Have done since I was like 12; my parents try to treat me like an adult and give me answers if I ask questions
this is also how all kids should be raised
it did however get me in a lot of trouble with teacher who insisted on talking down at me even in sixth form though by that point id just yell back -

This isn't the 1930s....My parents are retired so earn £4/week (each) as a state pension. -
Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
I can understand people's saying that they've never talked about it or that their parents are resistant to giving hard figures, but I'm bemused by the people who say they "have no idea" about their parents' income bracket. The clues, surely, are there. Unless you imagine that your parents are salting away some very large proportion of their income, the broad sense of it is reflected in the family's lifestyle.

Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
I have no idea what they earn. I asked when I was much younger, but wasn't allowed to know.
I'm sure they would tell me now if I asked, but I'm not on student finance so it has no revelance to me, and I don't want to know.
I noticed a big difference in our lifestyle when my mum got the job she has now. Before that, they were really tight with their spending and didn't buy much for me and my sister, but now we are more comfortable.Last edited by kat91s; 22-05-2012 at 09:06. -

Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?Teachers earn pretty good wages! My Mum's a teaching assistant and I don't consider us to be bad off!(Original post by vickie89)

Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
I know how much my Mum earns but not my Dad anymore as he's changed his job- although I found out how much he earned a few years back because of student finance. He is a very private person and wouldn't have told me if he could have helped it. Yet, yesterday morning when I told him I'd just got a job he asked me how much it paid!

That sounds interesting, are you at University? Did you have to learn Japanese recently, it's quite a challenging language isn't it?
I've been learning Japanese for 6 years. It's not as challenging as people think, although you do have to work hard. I'm picking it up immensely quickly now that I live here. -
Re: Do you know how much your parents earn?
I vaguely do. But its an odd question, because it varies. My Mother used to get a certain amount a year being a doctor. But with my father it varied, as he was an architect and was given different amounts depending on the project. Now, they're both retired but Mum was a professor for a while, and is still given money from that. They both also help run our grandparents business. So...i could estimate but its likely WAY higher/lower.
