Price of making a decent PC for my needs?
I just wanted to check out before I started; what would be a reasonable price for making a PC for these needs:
1. Large storage for music and films (~2TB at least)
2. Decent running speed (as in smooth w/ no freezing) whilst running Firefox with many addons, iTunes with a large library and a download manager at the same time.
3. I don't give a damn about graphic quality but speed is relatively important.
Cheers. -
Re: Price of making a decent PC for my needs?
SSD is overkill but you'll see an improvement, obviously you'd boot off there and then turn on trim and turn off defragmentation etc.
No os included.
Some graphics capability is always useful.
You could go cheaper but this does everything anyone ever wants done
as always add more HDD space as when you need. Want more ram get another 2X4GB sticks as it's cheap atm.Last edited by Rainingshame; 21-05-2012 at 20:44. -
Re: Price of making a decent PC for my needs?I'd add an SSD, preferably 256GB (£155) but you could get a 128 instead for half that(ish). Go for the Crucial M4 if you do get an SSD.(Original post by TheDefiniteArticle)
Wow, that's somewhat cheaper than I was expecting. Thanks guys.
It'll make the running of programs like iTunes and Firefox with lots of addons tonnes faster. -
Re: Price of making a decent PC for my needs?
I used SCAN for prices
Case - your choice
SSD - optional
CPU cooler - optional (stock is fine for your use)
DVD drive
Windows 7 OEM - £72.08
8GB (2x4GB) Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Jet Black LP, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.5V - £40.56
Intel Core i5 3450,1155, Ivy Bridge, Quad Core, 3.1GHz, 5 GT/s DMI, 650MHz GPU, 6MB Smart Cache, 31x Ratio, 77W, Retail - £145.38
I reckon an i3 would be suitable for your tasks if you want to drop the price. still capable CPU's
500W PSU, Corsair Builder Series CMPSU-500CXV2UK, 80% Eff', Uncertified, Quiet Fan, ATX v2.3 - £44.87
1TB Seagate ST1000DM003 Barracuda 7200.14 SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm 64mb Cache 8ms NCQ OEM Two of these - £136.35
MSI Z77A-G43, Intel Z77, S 1155, DDR3, SATA III - 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, PCIe 3.0 (x16), D-Sub/ DVI-D/ HDMI, ATX - £77.72
4GB RAM is more than enough. 8GB is a bit overkill so knock off £20 if you only want 4.
As I said CPU can be droppped, no GPU needed, PSU could be dropped a bit too depending on other components. -

Here's one I put together
https://secure.scan.co.uk/aspnet/Sho...86817035e5c097
If you don't have windows already just add another £70 to that.
Should be very fast.
