When I was interested in Dentistry, I was very tempted to talk about my 10th prestige achievements on CoD4. -
Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryI have a guitar but I don't know how to play -.-(Original post by TheWorldEndsWithMe)
Do you play an instrument? A friend was told that was good to mention if you play anything. -
Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryAh that's sounds quite good(Original post by H.J.P)

Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistry
Apparently they really like sewing and knitting!
Someone came to our school and did a talk on admissions and she told us that the admissions for dentistry at one of the London universities (I honestly cannot remember which one) were looking for applicants who had experience of sewing because it showed manual dexterity

Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryAh really?!! I've always wanted to make my own clothes do that could be pretty good(Original post by cesca42)

Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistry
How do you provide evidence to the admission panel that you have learnt to play an instrument (Is it based on trust?). I understand that with things like knitting, model making and art you can show physical evidence.
Are there any other activities people do to show manual dexterity which aren't as obvious as the musical instruments, art and knitting? -
Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryI suppose the offer could be conditional upon them verifying your musical talent, e.g. showing them proof that you've passed grade 6 or something like that(Original post by Gucci Mane2010)

With art you could possibly bring a portfolio in

Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistry
You can take things in e.g. art pictures, models, instruments.
You can show them videos from your phone or pictures
You can show certificates e.g. musical instrument grades
I'm going to buy some models from a shop and build them up over the summer and take one in, along with pictures. -
Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryPersonally i brought my trumpet with me and played for the interviewers. It was a good ice breaker and i think if you can make your interview a little bit more memorable, there is more chance that when making the offers, that you might be remembered for the right reasons. And who knows, that might get you an offer. But things like models are good, if you can get a work placement in a dental lab they might let you make something to take away. For example i made a wax denture and a mouth guard which fitted on top of some plaster mouldings they had left over. I brought that in with me and they seemed to like it(Original post by Gucci Mane2010)

Basicly, as a rule, things you can bring in to show them will work better as they can see and touch them and it makes the interview more interesting. You can talk about how you made whatever it is and that brings the interview under your control, which can only be a good thing! -
Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryI know what you're saying, but I'm confused. How does a one off wax denture demonstrate good manual dexterity? Surely it should be something that you regularly do and use your hands with e.g. a .hobby of sewing, model making, cup cake decorating etc. Sorry, I'm not having a go. I'm just confused about all this manual dexterity aspect. I don't really know what they're looking for.(Original post by Kartace)

Re: What could i do to show manual dexterity for applying for dentistryWell the obvious answer is ... it doesn't. But in combination with something else more long term it is a good embellishment. Although having said that, using wax and making stuff with it. Is how you start off in dental school, so if you can show them something of decent quality it can only help(Original post by wannabedentist2013)

in addition to that, it shows that you've been proactive in your work experience, and adds a touch of credibility to the whole interview and provides a talking point. Which can only be a good thing
Basically they're looking for an interest in a hobby that requires manual dexterity. As well as a reasonable amount of aptitude in it. This is because, as i'm sure you know. Dentistry requires alot of manual dexterity.
Unfortunatley one off things will get sniffed out. Like, say you've made a couple of models for the primary purpose of mentioning it in your statement. They'll soon catch on. And it comes across as slightly disengenuous. They want people who have a real passion in those sort of things. So it's better if you've been doing it for a while. That way it shows you have a real love of using your hands and being creative and that you're not just trying to win points with the admissions tutors.
Having said all that, if you haven't been doing something like that for any amount of time, it doesn't matter. Just start now, as long as you enjoy it and show a commitment to it. It will stand you in great stead. So there is no harm in starting up just before you apply. I's better than nothing after all!!
I hope that makes sense...it did in my head but sometimes what i write and what i actually mean don't match up

Anyway, best of luck to everyone applying, try not to worry too much about the manual dexterity, there are more important things. When i was at Leeds, they said that they don't concentrate on manual dexterity much because they are so confident in their ability to teach you ad give you those skills during the course itself. What they want is aptitude and the willingness and ability to learn. The interview and work experience/voluntary work are much more important to most. However with Leeds making the move to MMI that could very well change. As there is more than likley going to be a manual dexterity station. Where you'll probably be required to perform a task that test your hand eye co-ordination. That means it's probably going to be less important to evidence manual dexterity as they'll be able to test you at interview. But its always good to express an interest, i guess it's down to personal preference really. Anyways, best of luck everyone!!
