I'd quite like a photo of me and my gf together, as well as a message from her telling me how much she loves me.

a token of love or affection - a watch or locket is good. something that seems popular atm are army-style dogtags - you could get one engraved with a message or a simple 'i love you'.

You don't need to buy him expensive gifts. You don't really need to spend anything. If he's romantic as you say, he's more inclined to appreciate things that will show him that you love him. Fill a whole notebook of writing about him, what you like about him etc. Tell him to read it whenever he misses you.

Also if you can think of enough things, write down 1 thing you like about him that will be enough to last every day that he'll be gone for, and tell him that he's only allowed to read one at a time.

    Hope this helps.
    This is a brilliant idea.

A book token. If he cannot read then a record token.

    You're welcome
My boyfriend is the romantic type too, I'm tempted to do your idea for our anniversary (just over a week away!) but I've already done something similar-ish in the past, I've previously written on an A4 piece of paper "I love you because..." and then filled it with as many things as I could think of, complete with doodles too which he stuck on his wall

Thank you! There have been a lot of good comments, but this sounds like something he'd really like.

When i was in a similar situation i got my bf at the time a digital photo keyring and put photos of us on it. And because he went to america I couldn't talk to him very often because of phone prices, so i wrote him letters whenever I missed him or wanted to tell him something, and gave him them when he got back.

Lulz. You could make it a shaving of skin if the hair thing creeps you.

My boyfriend is going away for a couple of months over summer, and I want to get him something before he leaves. I don't want, like, a goodbye present or anything, seeing as he is coming back, I just want to give him something to remind him of me while he's away.
Boys, if you were in his position, what sort of thing would you want from your girlfriend?
Girls, if you were in my position, what would you buy for your boyfriend?
ANY ideas would be welcome, he's really good with buying great gifts and I'm quite clearly terrible at it!
the episode of how i met your mother called oh honey comes to mind

    I wouldn't mind some head...

    Phones.

You could let him take you up the...

Park, for a nice picnic on a sunny day.

But seriously, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Anything that makes a guy feel more like James Bond. Work with that criteria.
