Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam? Why did i get quoted.....all I meant was in Islam, when you follower the faith your a Muslim and nothing else of the sort e.g. 'moderate muslim'(Original post by sabre2th1)
I'm sure if you calculate it, a few thousand Muslims WOULD be close to 1%.. So the other billion (99%) remained calm. -
Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?
My friend constantly insults Islam (as a joke of course), e.g. Islam is backwards and draconian. But as 'moderate' Muslim, I've just realised that instead of acting like Muslims across the world and making an effigy of him then burning it, I leave it to Karma (and God) to pay him back finely like a b*tch.

Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?Agreed. Also, if God is all knowing, then he knows how to take a joke, right(Original post by Chow mein)
Aren't children taught "Don't get irritated when people are just trying to provoke a reaction" I think Muslims that get extremely offended need to get a grip

Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?A Muslim's religion plays a big part of their life. Its part of their identity, in the same way you could argue someone's family plays a big part of their life. If someone publicly mocked your mother, would you be angry?(Original post by Steevee)
An interesting take on it, were it not for the fact that a large proportion of the Muslims I talked to about such incidents refused to condemn the actions of the mobs, or at the most said they shouldn't really have killed anyone. Not exactly outrage and embarrassment in the region that you would hope for. -
Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?Yep, but I wouldn;t kill anyone over it. And if my brother did I'd denounce him as a mad bastard and be thouroughly sheepish about the whole thing. But that aside, my Mother is a close family member, Mohammed is some Arab that lived a long time ago that you have ascribed ridiculous importance to. We can't be held to account for your delusion, I mean, if a man held that Al Gore was a messenger of God, and you mocked him, would that man be right in killing a Muslim somewhere in the world on the back of that?(Original post by sabre2th1)

The reaction and lack of condemnation of Theo Van Gough, Salman Rushdie etc is frankly appaling, and indicative of the Islamic faith. Mohammed never had a problem putting people to the sword, something reflected by his followers often times. -
Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?I say the same about Islams discriminatory teachings and repressive ideology. There's freedom of religion, and there's abuse of it. Teaching people that other people are dirty, immoral and bound for Hell and that they should be looked down upon because they don't subscribe to your backwards ideology is an abuse of freedom of speech and human intellect(Original post by Perseveranze)
I'm sure you have did a well analyzed study of the Qur'an
But, there's a difference between your "criticisms" and then pure insults, which revolve around pointlessly drawing highly offensive images of a religious figure.
It's not freedom of speech, but rather the abuse of it.

it is a free country, you have every right to satirise whatever you want to. and as far as I'm concerned book-burning was a symbol of Nazi Germany. Just saying.
and i don't mean to be insulting, but the cartoons had a great deal of truth in them. -
Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?
I'm so used to hearing crap about muslims, it doesn't even bother me anymore. My parents weren't bothered about the burning of the Quran and drawing the prophet, they were of course slightly annoyed but what can they do about it, people do all sorts of things these days and it is okay because it's called 'freedom'.
Quran wasn't written in a modern society. Just hope the rest of the Muslim world gets rid of the backward mentality and start living in the 21st century. I'm not saying they have to compromise faith for being up to date.Last edited by letsbehonest; 22-05-2012 at 22:14. -
Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam? But no one says that insulting the public figures are a good thing. Criticising their actions, yes. Insulting, no and stupid. You wouldn't care for a theist calling an atheist stupid, deluded and hellbound would you? That's an insult, not a criticism.(Original post by hannaaahlima)

Yes, we do live in a free country (to what ever extent you wish) but insulting people is really unnecessary and uncivilised. -
As someone whose very existence is threatened on a regular basis by Islamic countries, I feel that the fact that the majority of Muslims in this country are unable to take a joke is representative of the fact that the culture (not the religion itself) of Islam is fundamentally flawed, and the moment this becomes clear to the so called left wingers in media institutions like the Guardian, the better. Change needs to come. Fast.

Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam?
I don't go by labels, I'm not a "moderate" or an "extremist" Muslim. I'm a Muslim and that's all there is to it. Muslims who allow themselves to be labelled do so to kiss arse. As for people insulting Islam, I have debated people on Islam before. Some were critical but intelligent and made good points, which I enjoyed arguing against. Others were immature fools who kept repeating and contradicting themselves and in the end I decided that they weren't worth my time. I don't let certain people make me angry though, all I feel is a little frustration at their closed-mindedness.

Re: Moderate Muslims: Would you get angry if someone insulted Islam? How easily you brandish the inability to take a joke to the 'majority' of Muslims in the country, then akin that to the culture. It's quite sickening. People like are the ones who fuel the BNP.(Original post by Mangoberg)
