I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
The video says more than I ever could. Thoughts if you have any, below:
Crashes in city centres don't make me think about my perceptions of speed as NO ONE should be speeding in city centres to begin with. But this made me think twice about not only not doing 80 but not doing more than 60
At what speed would it be safe to hit unexpected debris without losing control anyway? I just don't know........

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
That's just down to the driver not looking far enough ahead - if you see debris in the road, you don't just drive straight at it.
And the driver of the car with the dash cam should have seen the accident start to happen then slowed right down, if you see a car barrelling out of control, you don't just maintain speed. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
Perhaps it's a language barrier as I can't follow the voices talking in this video but I don't think it's actually very clear what happened in this video? Obviously there was a crash but I couldn't really tell what caused it or why it was being filmed. So without understanding the context I don't think it really makes me have any thoughts about the limit. For a start, I don't know how fast that car was going or what made it lose control so I can't link that to their speed.
Apologies if it's just me not following the video very well, but an explanation of what actually happened might make for easier discussion? -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...At 0:29 in the video, the car hit debris from a prior accident, which is why it bounced and lost control in the first place. He didn't spot the debris in time and I don't think he was even speeding. They couldn't of been doing much more than 75mph themselves. But yeah, that's what caused the accident.(Original post by Sazzle4)

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
I'm not suprised no one stopped. There's nowhere safe to pull over. You can't park in the hard sholder because other people are still doing 50mph through the crash site. You can't be sure some idiot won't plough in the back of the truck and on to themselves too in the fast lane.
And (not that others would know) but there's no way the driver survived hitting the lorry headfirst at 50mph let alone the barrel roll. Anyone stopping to check would not have seen anything capable of saving...... -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
The camera looks like its mounted on a HGV so it isn't like hitting the brakes would have done much at that speed/distance. Crashing into a 1.5 tonne piece of a metal and then the central reservation is what slowed it down.
I'm not going to judge the other driver for going over the debris. We don't know how fast he was going or what he was doing at the time. There's always debris on the motorway and it's usually something harmless like a bag. Judging by the title of the video it's too late to point fingers anyway.
As for stopping to help, there isn't a heck of a lot you can do. What do you propose, slamming on the brakes at 70mph and pulling over to the hard shoulder (inevitably causing a traffic jam and delaying emergency services), then running across the motorway and sitting watching after you realise you can't extract the driver with the tools you have in your toolbag?
EDIT: guess I took too long typing that out. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Did their tyre blow out?(Original post by Rascacielos)
Wow. What on earth happened to that first car?
I couldn't help but notice how nobody stopped to help.
That's in the US? Things can be pretty wierd there in terms of people being good to each other.
I've seen a lot of really crazy driving in America, my Mum was driving me and my Sister on I5 outside Seattle one time, this pickup truck was hammering past at 80, then he decided he didn't like being on our side of the road. The I5 is this huge freeway but it had no central barrier in that part like the motorways do here. He just stopped dead then slowly did a series of manoeuvers and then crossed the middle and off in the other direction.
Meanwhile, behind, utter chaos and madness, about 50 cars and trucks doing slaloms and amazingly, just missing each other.
He shook his fist at all the people giving him the horn. -

Yes. Well I'm not in favour of the new speed limits. But that probably because I know someone who is an old dangerous driver, whose eyesight is a little funny and thinks its alright to go through traffic lights!

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...True about the parking thing, although you could have stopped in front of the crash.(Original post by Dr Good Manners)

And there's no way you can predict that the driver didn't survive. Chances are, he/she probably didn't. However, my Mum was involved in an accident of a similar kind, similar speeds, similar damage to the car. She's still here today. Besides that, the drivers who passed by wouldn't have known what happened.Last edited by Rascacielos; 22-05-2012 at 10:01. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Again, what would they have done? Grab the jaws of life out of the back of their Polo, cut them out, sling on a neck collar and put them on a spinal board? With oxygen and IV fluids ready for the paramedics to arrive?(Original post by Rascacielos)

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...I like the way the guy filming just carries on after the crash at the same speed, like nothing's happened.(Original post by AliceStrawbs)
I thought it was going to be this video.
The car coming across through red must have been doing about 90?
EDIT Did someone neg me because they think I actually really liked the way he carried on driving?? Have you ever heard of irony?Last edited by SoNottingH; 22-05-2012 at 12:23. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Both videos have really made me question humanity - would you really just carry on driving? I for one would be far too shaken! Just so fast.(Original post by SoNottingH)
