Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...The first person stops. We were there when it happened, we stopped to help. If it wasn't us, it would have been someone else. If everyone had stopped there would have been chaos.(Original post by silverbolt)
which makes you a risk of causing another accident. why would people stop? Its a motorway you DONT stop on it unless its an emergency, if your past the accident your not going to stop and run back. and besides what are you going to do perform emergency surgery at the side of the road with a keyfob a can a redbull and an old carrier bag.
notice your contradiction?
Oh and here have a tinfoil halo so you look like the angel you so obviously are
At every crash site in France you will see at least one car who has stopped to help.
I'm not an angel by any means but I did know that I could help the driver until the emergency services showed up and I have a heart. I could never leave someone at the side of the road, sorry. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...I know exactly where your coming from but it is really hard to stop when your going at 70mph, within an instant your past it and sometimes didn't even see it.(Original post by py0alb)
Maybe I'm weird, but would you not stop if you saw a crash happen in front of you on the motorway?
I can't imagine just driving blithely by while some poor bastard bleeds to death. Surely you'd stop? Right?
I once came upto an accident like that in the middle barrier and fortunately there was noone behind me so I swerved into the hard shoulder to ring for help but the worst thing was the police on the phone were telling me not to go across the motorway because of the traffic. I was screaming down the phone that I wanted to run across and help but they said I will put my own life in danger because there was still cars going past as it was a busy motorway. I cried my eyes out until the ambulance got there coz I could see noone had got out the car. But there was too frequently a car going past to run across. Truly traumatic. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Yep thats what I got told. It's awful though standing and watching and you can't go help(Original post by silverbolt)
and before anyone pulls me on it - its an emergency that involves you. Moral obligation aside - the number one rule of first aid is DONT PUT YOURSELF AT RISK.
stopping on a motorway and getting out - clarifies as a risk.

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...
I was on the A34 when a crash happened right in front of me and didn't stop. It's hard to describe unless you've been in that situation but you literally have seconds to decide whether to stop or not, stop and to do it safely. I just remember thinking 'Oh ****' and having a million things running through my head but deciding that by attempting to stop I would more than likely have someone go in to the back of me or stop so far away that people going around the accident are more likely to hit me/my car.
It's a bloody scary situation to be in but you have to decide whether you'll be doing more harm than good by stopping and yes I was so shaken that at the next layby I had to pull over and calm down. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Completely agree(Original post by letsdothetimewarpagain)

is it is really hard to describe to anyone that has not seen it what it is like. You want to do the right thing and then all you think afterwards is, oh christ that could have been me and it really shakes you up.

You've got to put yourself in the mindset of the emergency services, would you rather treat 1 or 2 casualties or 10-20 after people got out of their cars to try and help and other vehicles slammed into the back of their cars or worse into them themselves.
Surely you'd let people who are trained, deal with these situations in the safest way possible. What could you do with 6 minutes of your time to help another person that would warrant risking your own life and the lives of others?
Obviously you'd ring the emergency services and it's situation dependant, but for the most I know for sure if traffic is going past at 50-70MPH I'd be a greater liability trying to exit my vehicle than pulling over and ringing 999.
On another note, this makes me rage:

Yes, much better to wait for the trained people to arrive and pull the dead body out of the wreckage rather than being arsed to carefully across the road and save his life yourself.
Enjoy explaining that faultless logic to his grieving widow and children.
Some people make me sick. Its like all those people who said they would help an old lady being mugged by a couple of kids in case they got kicked in the shins. ****ing cowards. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Being kicked in the shins is a hell of a different scenario to a busy motorway/dual carrigeway with people still carrying on. If it was a case where all lanes were blocked and no one could go anyway then yeah fair enough there's more of a reason to try and help but if a lane is still free you'd be moronic to try and do anything (unless you were a trained individual). Half the country wouldn't even know that the first huge nono with casualties is not to move them, let alone anything beyond just common sense(Original post by py0alb)

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...The majority of people would know enough to help the majority of cases - or at the very least, to do no harm. Most people must have taken a first aid course at one point or another. I've been on three. There really is no excuse for not knowing basic first aid.(Original post by PapaShmurff)
So if someone had serious internal injuries, which would be likely in a high speed crash, the majority of people would know how to save their life? Ok then.
Even if the chance you might be able to help is 50:50, isn't that a chance worth stopping for? Even if the probability of saving someone's life was 1 in 1000, isn't that still worth stopping for? How heartless are we that we even have to ask this question? If you have even the tiniest shred of decency and humanity in you, you shouldn't even have to think about it. -

I'd try and stop a mugging but a speeding chunk of metal heading 70mph straight for me I don't think I've got a very high chance of being able to stop. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Also care to enlighten me how you carefully cross a busy 70mph motorway and how often you have successfully negotiated it yourself?(Original post by py0alb)

Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...Um........you are aware of the fact your beginners first aid course doesn't cover blunt force trauma management right?(Original post by py0alb)

EDIT: I saw your lulzy suggestion that its "easy" to cross a busy motorway. Now come back to reality with this clip:

This really isn't rocket science, I really don't understand how your struggling with it so hard. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...What??? The crash in this video is in the far left lane. In this country this is the fast lane and is the opposite side to the hard shoulder. You do not park here even after the crash, apart from the two that have already crashed, it would be dangerous for the guy in the van to move his to the hard shoulder.(Original post by py0alb)

It is possible that motorists could still crash into the wreckage so parking more cars near this is not a good idea. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...So you pull in a good 50 yards up the road, the far side of the crash, close to the central reservation.(Original post by kratos90)

Really, logic doesn't appear to be a strong point amongst the trolls on this thread. Its quite disspiriting how stupid some people appear to be. -
Re: I Thought The 70mph Limit Was Stupid Till I Saw This...And do what? Pull the guy out of the car and cause even more damage to him whilst causing more blockage on a busy motorway? You do realise that that wreckage is so bad that only the emergency services are going to be able to get him/her out safely without causing further damage. If it was about to explode then it is a different story.(Original post by py0alb)

Keyboard warrior, you say you would do a lot but I highly doubt a guy with 13 000 posts on an internet forum would do jack.
