Let's protest against elitism by burning things which are expensive! That's the sort of thing the poor can afford to do, isn't it?

It seems people are more concerned over the swann here. Without the swann, don't think they'd be burning their gowns over "elitism".

Not really sure what the link is, but to be fair if that Swann was dangerous it's good they moved him away. If a student got attacked, it'd be terrible. Anyway he's only been relocated, it's not like he was put down (which indeed could happen if he does attack a student).
He did attack students. Many, many students, as well as quite a lot of local rowers, including children. I'm glad he wasn't put down but I seriously don't understand how anyone can have a problem with him being moved - if it had been someone's dog instead of a swan, it would have been shot.

I can answer that. They shoot dogs. But not swans.

Why do people seem to be ignoring the topic of elitism?

They need to get over the fact that some institutions will be a bit elite when choosing their students. They should be happy that Cambridge doesn't have a reputation of being a racist institutuon.

Burning gowns? That's not only pointless, but stupid too. They make great Harry Potter fancy dress costumes :yep:

(Clearly I didn't apply to Oxford in the hopes of being a Harry Potter extra. At all :ninja: :getmecoat: )
did you ever see them filming there??

I think they usually film outside of term time. That said, when I was much younger and my older sister was doing her undergrad (so sometime between 2000-2003), we went to look at all the huge white marquees and vans parked along Christ Church Meadow for the filming of Harry Potter 2. Or maybe it was Harry Potter 3... :moon:

:console: Not to worry. Just literally saw big vans and marquees. Didn't spot any famous faces. Never made it into the movies either :nopity:

A swan called Mr Asbo...wtf, this whole thing is like some weird Lewis Carroll LSD mash-up. Have they not got anything better to do with their time?

Waste of good gowns. Anti-elitist, but clearly not pro-environment.

Never thought the day would come when "anti-elitist" and "Cambridge" were in the same sentence :colonhash:

This whole protest is a farce, it's pretty much the culmination of a two year hate campaign of the Cambridge Evening News against student rowers, and that moron Ian Bone spouting irrational class war ****e.

Suit themselves. They'll only have to buy another gown.

Personally, I call that shooting yourself in the foot.

This reminds me of the story about that pretentious 'rejection' letter Oxford received from one of their applicants.
