i think the same of male primary school teachers as i think of female pilots - that they are people doing a job they enjoy.

    What about American Studies?
I dunno, you'd have to check. Degrees have to contain a certain % of a subject taught at schools (even though it's way more advanced.) So something like physics involves maths and physics so you can then go on to teacher maths or science up to gcse or maths and physics at a-level.

Is it stupid for a man to want to be a primary school teacher? I want to be either a secondary school teacher or primary school. The latter seems to be a bit weird for a male? Opinions.
It's certainly not stupid, there is a huge need for male teachers in primary schools particularly; men are vastly under-represented in primary teaching and more and more children are growing up with no male role model in their lives (absent fathers etc)....as a male primary teacher you could potentially mentor a child, help to lay good foundations and change that child's life. You may even have the advantage of a bit of positive discrimination in the jobs market, given the level of under-representation at the moment. Plus...when my younger sister was, well...younger :P there was a reeeeallly hot Australian male teacher at the school, and all the female teachers, parents etc fancied him....you could end up with a nice, middle aged fan club

Re: What do you think of male primary school teachers?
One of the best primary school teachers I had was a man. I think he was the only male teacher in the school, so be prepared to work in a female-dominated environment, but we kids didn't really think anything of it and from my recollection none of the parents had a problem with their child having a male teacher. In spite of what certain newspapers try to get us to believe, men can like working with children without being a paedophile and I think the vast majority of the public realise that.

As a more recent reassurance, my male friend works in a nursery - so really young kids - and says that none of the parents have had a problem with him.

I had a male primary teacher for 2.5 years, in KS2.

He was pretty good at his job actually, and I look back on my days with him as my class teacher fondly

I'm not sure if this is true, but aren't they giving more financial incentives to encourage males into the profession? just something I heard
    Yeah I think so.

My primary school had a couple of male teachers, and one (that I know of) still works there! His wife is also a teacher who works there. He's a nice guy, it's always nice to see men wanting to work in that sort of environment! Good for you xD

Primary school teachers generally seem stupid....I'm guessing a lot of them had to retake their maths GCSE about 10 times. I never had a male primary school teacher, but there was 2 in the school and they seemed like the 2 best teachers. We rarely ever did PE because the female teachers would make constant excuses. We just seemed to do the typical girly subjects of English and art.

Unless you went to Primary school before about 1990 (off the top of my head I'm struggling to remember the exact year but I think it was about 1990...someone will correct me if I'm wrong!) then you did the subjects required by the National Curriculum. Schools have little to no choice over which subjects to teach.

When I was in Primary school I hated all my lessons with women teachers, they were boring.
But my IT teacher on the other hand was a man and he was fun... even though it was at a very young age, he was the one who made computers and so forth seem like fun and not like a chore like the rest of lessons.
Could be why I'm applying for Software Engineering at Uni... tbh most of my IT teachers have had fun lessons which made me enjoy the subject so much.

Re: What do you think of male primary school teachers?
    I think its important.
young children need to have male techers - particuarly boys, so they can talk about personal things (that they may not feel easy discussing with a female teacher) with someone outside the family for whatever reason, and to have good male role models - particuarly if there isn't one at home.

Working in a primary school is seen as a woman's profession because it is looking after children before they have the greater independance needed for secondry school, - thus an extention on the womans job in the early 20th century and 19th century. had to put in that political and feminist out look there :P

but working in a primary school is as difficult as secondary (it is harder, according to my mother, who has worked in both) and is as important as seconady as it provides foundations to learning and teched children to read and write sufficiently with basic arithmatic and scientific skills.

The best primary teacher I ever had was a man. I know someone awesome whose a guy and going into Primary teaching. I also know that with the competition being so high, being a man will give you significant advantage as it's preferable to have mixed sex teachers.

In my opinion, primary schools really benefit from a male teacher because it helps balance it out, gives the young lads someone they can perhaps relate to more, avoids massive awkwardness in sex ed...

Nothing wrong at all basically. Arguably you're at an advantage as a man because it immediately makes you different from all the female applicants, but that's not necessarily a fact and you obviously still have to be good at it.

I'm considering primary teaching though, did my work experience in a primary school and one week I was with a guy teaching Year 3. Also had a bloke teaching Year 2 IT

Re: What do you think of male primary school teachers?
We only had all female teachers in primary school and I must admit as a girl with many other female peers we where fine with males our age but in high school with male teachers it became awkward and plus my girls felt like " kids in a candy shop" when it came to male teachers.

After years all my high school teachers are male in the subjects i've picked i only get one female which is split with a male for maths. I must admit I know would rather as male teachers for help before females no idea why but
