Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
Hi,
I want to gauge how many people actually care about academic work and/or studies. I, myself, got amazing A levels but did not give one solitary **** about anything I "studied" during the course. I went to uni, didn't care again, and left due to boredom - I had no idea what the point of it all was. The only reason I stuck out A levels is because I was blagging top marks, I wouldn't have bothered if i'd had to put any real work in.
So, does anyone actually care about schoolwork? Or do people just do it because they have to? I find it hard to believe someone can be enthusiastic about doing a degree, especially since so many people on here are like "ugh revision is so hard/boring".

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I actually used to in GCSEs. I don't particularly like the way A Levels are shoved down your throat, it's pure garbage and I despise the whole system. I do have an interest in my subjects but A Levels have really just sucked every bit of enthusiasm out of me. It has been quite draining

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?I agree, the A level teaching really dampens any enthusiasm one may have for the subject. It's too structured and any independent thought it just quashed, making subjects like English Lit, Philosophy etc crap, as they don't allow for proper exploration of ideas.(Original post by LifeIsGood)

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I personally enjoy competition, so I tend to enjoy academics. I have some really inspiring (and some not-so-inspiring) teachers who make it easy to enjoy each subject too. I mean, I'm doing AS right now so I can't speak for uni students, but I couldn't imagine a world in which I didn't like the whole repetitive process of school and academics.
Also, I take mostly physics/maths-related subjects so maybe I'd not say the same if I were doing opinion-based subjects such as philosophy. There's a whole blur about whether you're right or wrong in such subjects which I couldn't possibly tolerate :P -
Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
Some A-levels have made me enjoy the subject even more (maths and media studies) but some have bored me to death and frankly hate it.
you're so right about a-levels being all about memory - you don't even need to understand it, its just learning it off by heart like a learning a script for a play.(Original post by isp)
It's amusing how A-Levels favour students with better memory. -
Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I tend to enjoy most Biology, maths problems and some parts of Physics (like quantum/particle physics and cosmology), to the extent that I sometimes read up on the latest research in Bio/Phys just out of curiosity. However, I dislike having to memorising textbook answers and mark schemes. Oh well, you can't have everything, I guess.

I actually enjoy learning new things, call me a nerd but that's actually who i am. Learning things I didn't know previously amazes me and some subjects genuinely intrigue me. I just don't like the education system... Exams completely take away the fun in learning!

I like learning, studying, getting good marks and having something to show for my hard work at the end of the day. I want to make something of myself, and I have academic goals which I aim to achieve. I guess it's what drives me, and yes it might sound sad, but that's just how I roll.

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?yeah. I love the subject. Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna pretend I enjoy slogging through dry textbooks or battling through frustrating problems, but at the end of it when I understand another "thing", it's always worth it. I'll never stop studying it. It's actually the only thing I do that doesn't quickly start to feel like a depressing waste of time.(Original post by I Gurn Hard)

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?I was like that but A Levels really drain your enthusiasm for learning the subject instead of memorising mark schemes, it's really annoying. But hopefully Uni is better.(Original post by Aquar)

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I took A level maths, chemistry, history. I don't "like" maths as a subject, but I like logical subjects and approaches, so things like programming interest me. History USED to entertain me, but instead of learning about really cool periods many centuries ago, I'm studying 1930s British politics. A load of tripe that bored me within a week. I'm also fascinated by science, so Chemistry as a subject interested me. The exams and the way I was supposed to apply my knowledge, however, did not.
Basically, yeah, I'm sort of interested, but it's all down to what I experienced in the teaching of those subjects. -
Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I am interested, actually!
While at college this past year I found the one subject that really interests in me: media studies. To believe I originally took it just to round-up my hours so I would be a full-time, rather than part-time, student. Studying this subject completely reformed my career goals.
I even enjoyed revising for it because I knew I wasn't studying just for the exam - I was revising the material because I genuinely want to know it inside-out.

Re: Are you actually interested in academics/studying?
I used to be interested at GCSE. Now at A-level where I have to memorise so much more, look through examiners' reports, mark schemes, internet research, learning quotes etc, I just hate it and can't stand it any more.
What academic of English Literature is going to write 2 essays in 2 hours without looking at the texts they're writing about whilst writing? It's ridiculous.Last edited by Flyteryder; 10-06-2012 at 21:29.
