WHat do you think of the idea to export prisoners
Which means the idea to physically lock up prisoners who are scenteced to more than 3 years to serve in 'overseas' prisions. Various other elements of civil service are 'outsourced' currently to save money. In the UK it is estimated that each new prison place costs £119000 plus the annual average cost for each prisoner is over £40000. That doesnt include the costs needed to build new prisons and finding the land to build them in the UK. Plus we address all the complaints that serious criminals having an easy life in prison, with cable tv, pool tables, ipods and playstations.
The idea is that serious criminals ie repeat violent offenders, terrorists, sex offenders etc could serve long scenteces in prisons in asia/africa etc where the cost would be a fraction of what we pay - and also serve as a proper deterrent to crime and repeat crime, which is very high in the uk. With the money saved , could even be used to offer free travel for some family members for visits per year etc

to them its a business isnt it - why do some countries take our customer complaints in their call centres? If they get paid a price by HM prisons whcih is probably way more than their national wage average, why should nt they agree - im talking about the countirs that have excess capacity in their jails or have more space in their land to build more prisons. -
Re: WHat do you think of the idea to export prisonersConsidering the few countries that still torture prisoners most probably have capital punishment in place...I somehow doubt they will be getting any compensation...(Original post by zaliack)
Great idea, send them abroad, let them get tortured, and then have our courts force us to pay millions in compensation. -
Re: WHat do you think of the idea to export prisonersIf we send them to a place where they get the death penalty... Well, let's just say our friends at Strasbourg aren't going to be too happy.(Original post by pshewitt1)

Re: WHat do you think of the idea to export prisonersYou are sending the prisoner there to serve a sentence according to UK laws, you aren't sending them to that country to be sentenced. Big difference there.(Original post by zaliack)

Re: WHat do you think of the idea to export prisoners
to me, it doesn't seem like a good idea - we'd then have to answer all the questions about human rights bla bla, and then pay lots of money to make sure they're ok. and then we'd have to pay lots of aid to those countries when their population starts to become infected with rapists, murderers and child molesters.
ps. remember australia? -
Re: WHat do you think of the idea to export prisonersYeah, of course. However, if we send them to a third world country, for example, it seems likely that they'd argue that they are being subjected to an 'inhumane or degrading treatment or sentence', contrary to Art 3 ECHR.(Original post by Herr)
