Re: Facebook shares tumble...Does he make loads straight away, or does he have difficulty selling because if he sells everyone will know? So maybe he's not as rich in reality as he seems to be?(Original post by Foo.mp3)
Gotta hand it to the guy.. this was the mother of all rip offs. Pitty tha fools who invested big
Even so, I bet he's incredibly rich! Pity he's married, haha. -
Re: Facebook shares tumble...
Was obvious really, wasn't it? I wish I'd shorted it spread betting, would have been able to make a lot of easy money. (Maybe you still can?)
But gambling isn't healthy, and this hot weather is absolutely beautiful, so who cares?
The big investors were mainly the banks. With us to bail them out, we're the motherzuckers.(Original post by Foo.mp3)

Not sure what % of the company was floated but you're quite right, if he held onto most of the shares and then attempted to dump them the markets would definitely twig
He could've done better in the bridal stakes tbh, so perhaps there's still hope, if you're into that kinda guy

Re: Facebook shares tumble...She seems such a shy ordinary kind of thing, but then she went to Harvard so presume she's super-intelli underneath. And I'm into all incredibly mega-rich young guys who are reasonably bearable, yes. Lulz.(Original post by Foo.mp3)

Re: Facebook shares tumble...I know nothing about the guy, beyond the obvious, but he does strike me as a bit of a dork and is certainly no looker(Original post by SoNottingH)

Re: Facebook shares tumble...
He has sold over 1 billion dollars worth of shares, the other director sold over 600 million dollars worth. How is this even legal?! No wonder they were dropping like stones, biggest pump and dump in history.
Wow, what a hoot, they are going to drop and drop, I would say you can still short this now. -
Re: Facebook shares tumble...Around 400 Million users click on the Facebook ads, that's a hellua lot. Most people don't know about Adblock and that's a good thing for people like us who use it.(Original post by Smack)
I think anyone who invested a lot of money in Facebook's shares was a massive fool and probably doesn't use social networking themselves.
Firstly, all social networks rise and fall. Facebook has risen these last few years but it will eventually fall and get overtaken by something else, just like how no-one uses MySpace or Bebo these days. Google+ hasn't so far been the one to overtake Facebook as some might have initially thought but something will.
Secondly, who even clicks on ads on Facebook - or even the internet, for that matter? What's the point in spending millions to advertise to people who just use their ad-blocker?
And I don't think you can compare Facebook to Myspace. Myspace never took off with the older generation as well as this it also never took off internationally. Facebook will fall just like every single empire in history (technological empires and literal empires) have fallen but I can't see it being any time soon. -
Re: Facebook shares tumble...They may have helped to aye, but genetic composition is merely one part of the picture; success is a function of core attributes yes but also of chance circumstance and tenacity(Original post by SoNottingH)
His genes got him into Harvard and then + at least a billion, so between the two of you...
The two of us? Wasn't aware I had 'entered the race'

Well, I read a lot about genetics and that sort of thing, as it's a topic that I'm really interested in, so I'm afraid I can't let you get away with that comment. Evolution has no teleology [end goal] -- it's not there to make us bigger, brainer, better. After all, we're going to become extinct soon, like 99.9% of all other creatures who've ever walked on the face of the earth. In recent human history, both our bodies and our brains have actually become smaller (some scientists argue that small brains allow for better connections between neurons etc., but some just accept that we're losing processing power). A neanderthal would be able to beat the **** out of us. And just think how powerful a chimpanzee is. All evolution does is to adapt organisms to their environment. If we have a society where nerds can become alpha males (although, of course, that's not really happening, as he may be rich, but he seems to be monogamous and presumably doesn't keep a harem of potential mates), then those are the people who'll prosper; if we have a society where violence reaps the best rewards, then obviously the really big beasts will prosper the most at the expense of the nerds. (And I'm using prosper there simply to relate to evolutionary success, but nature doesn't really care whether there are more humans on the planet or not, regardless of what they're like, it just happens -- until one day it doesn't happen any longer.) As I say, there's no purpose to evolution, it simply works to adapt organisms to their environment.
And, of course, it's also worth noting that the environment and epigentic effects (which can "switch" genes on and off) both have a very significant effect on the phenotype (i.e. the person); genes are just one part of an interrelated and complex system (they're certainly not the "instruction book for life", as the popular metaphor has it).
Again, sorry for the unnecessary rant!

Re: Facebook shares tumble...
In all fairness, I expected it to soar up to 50-60 dollars a share, purely because of the amount of people who would have bought shares just because they've seen it all over the news. I planned to get in low and sell after a couple of hours trading for 50-60, obviously as an actual investment it's completely not worth it by I assumed people would buy into it unknowingly high :/
Didn't work out, now I'm stuck with shares hoping they can at some point get back up to $42 so I can get out fast. -

As you've pointed out in a round about way, we no longer live in a (polygamous) social/mating hierarchy where the sole carriers of the human genome are apex group members; thus in the evolutionary sense of the term 'prosper', successful nerdy types do not particularly, relatively speaking. Indeed they have less time in which to become skilled seducers/lovers, and to find a suitably sweet mate, and a lower innate capacity for these things, hence in many ways they stand to lose out (as this Zucker character demonstrates by reverting to the [very plain] 'college sweetheart' default)(Original post by jismith1989)
