I'm currently at college (sorry, I know this thread is aimed at secondary school students) and taking History, Politics, English Lit and Law, though am dropping law next year because it's a bit of a soft subject. Going to study Law at University, then do something either in Law (solicitor) or something to do with Politics, though I'm 90% sure I will be going down the Law path. I've wanted to do Law for years

Nope, I'm not that good at maths although I probably could; it's just that it's so time consuming and I'm not really into it enough, although I am always interested in learning new areas in maths which seems contradictory but anyway, I wish you the best of luck in that test!!

By the way I recommend this documentary- you may have seen it- called 'beautiful young minds', it's about the selection process for the british IMO team (well in 2005/06)

You must enjoy Maths though by the sounds of it? and yes I have seen that, it was great to watch! The number of people on the team with aspergers syndrome shocked me!

Well I do think they centered the documentary about those students specifically to convoke that general reception; that these kids are so talented because they have asperger's while the more 'normal' people were not focused on since it wouldn't have made for very entertaining viewing.

Yes I do, not nearly as much as you though it seems, I'm more interested in its applications to be honest, particularly in engineering :P But of course I'm also intrigued by many areas of it like you. Are you doing the additional maths test this summer?

FYI: it helps to have some idea what you want to do before you take your A-Levels, or else you find yourself in my positio (of taking some A-Levels, deciding on a career path and having to redo an entire year because your A-Levels aren't the right ones -___-).

Me; psychology, sociology, chemistry, biology and AS english lit.

    Hopefully, a psychiatrist
Psychiatry as in the medical speciality? I'm sure most Medical Schools dislike it when students redo A-Levels, or have you sorted something out with the Uni's?

Whilst I think your comment is partially correct, I still think they were selected onto the team because they were the best at Maths, not because they had aspergers. There is a correlation between aspergers and mathematical capability, and I think the purpose of the documentary was to highlight that.

I am doing the FSMQ I take it you are as well?

I didn't mean to say that they were picked based on the fact that they had aspergers, my comment seems to have been misconstrued, and yes the purpose of the documentary was to highlight this correlation but I still feel that they could have spent more time talking to the people without aspergers or with less severe cases of it.

Yes lol :P Good luck, do you think that you'll get full marks?

It's bed time for me anyway so I'll see your response tomorrow.

I can't wait to do more Maths and Physics at college! The thought of doing Maths and Physics everyday excites me I will originally take those 5, but drop either Biology or Chemistry if the word load becomes too much! I wouldn't want the extra subject to be detrimental to my Maths and Physics scores - as they are first priority!
Aw wow, good luck Can I just ask if you have to be naturally born with a mathematical brain in order to do well at GCSE? I'm dying for an A!

Warning to all prospective A level students: A levels are not easy. If you aren't prepared to put lots of time, effort and dedication into your A levels, then don't do them. They are massively time consuming, and not at all as easy as they are percieved to be. In year 12 I was under the illusion that I could get through them the same way I did with my GCSE's; with minimal effort but good results. Big mistake. My lack of effort simply meant that this year I had to work twice as hard as I had to resit a lot of my AS exams, while working on my A2s at the same time. I'm not saying they're not worth it, because they definitely are. They are just alot of hard work, but aslong as you're willing to work at them it will definitely pay off.

Just sharing some friendly advice that I wish someone had given me before I started sixth form

I'm doing maths, further maths, physics, chemistry, and a new potential addition biology. I have no idea what I want to be (which is why I may be doing biology despite not liking it, for the increased variety of options.)
If you don't like it, don't do bio! It is a lot of work and if you get stuck with OCR as the exam board...you're screwed...just saying.. Good luck with the others though

I second this A-Levels are REALLY hard compared to GCSEs. I literally have no free time with mine (Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Spanish), and I'd also say, if you are a considering a subject that you aren't too keen on, do NOT take it. A-Levels require so much work and dedication that if you hate the subject, you will not get a good grade, I promise you. I didn't like Spanish that much, and taking the A-Level was one of the worst decisions I made. I really want you guys to learn from that mistake, because no-one told me when I was choosing my options.
Best of luck for GCSE exams and your A-Levels in the future. Despite the hard work, if you enjoy the subject, you will actually enjoy the A-Level

Oh dear, I hope she does! I find it amazing how many people at college start aiming for medicine without a clue on what the admissions process entails!

XD! The unfortunate thing about dispensing advice about A-Levels is that most most people listening would then think, "That's only the case for them, I'm clearly different/smarter/a genius the like of which the education system has never seen!"

Strangely enough, I never found the jump to A-Levels that hard, though that's likely because I took IGCSE's so we'd already covered a lot of the AS syllabus.. Though that's led me to having comparatively low grades in IGCSE's .

Yes I'd definitely agree with the people above about A Levels, you need to work incredibly hard for them. I'm currently doing AS Level exams at the moment and there is very limited time to learn all the information that you need to know for each exam. My advice would be to start revision early. If you learn best like I do by making yourself a set of revision notes and reading them over again and again and again. Then it's best to start doing them as soon as you start your A Levels. You may think that " Oh, the exams are ages away i don't need to start revising yet" but i strongly suggest you do, as it will make it easier in the long run for you, and also, it takes the pressure off you having to cram all the revision in just before your exam if you learn it gradually. 1 last very important point, if you are allowed study periods or "free" lessons, DO NOT waste them. I have seen so many people in my school that sit there playing cards instead of doing proper revision. And think about it, the more you get done in school, the less you have to do at home which is always a good thing!
