A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)
Discussion for A-Level students and for those choosing their A-Level subjects.

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)Haha, I'm doing exactly the same as you- Biology, Chemistry, History and English Literature(Original post by Lucy96)
Just thought I'd ask everyone what A levels they plan to take and what career you'd like to do if you get the required grades
I'm interested in doing Biology, Chemistry, History and English Literature
Then hopefully going on to do a degree in Veterinary Medicine or Zoology(which there aren't many decent jobs available for in the UK sadly!)
I never considered going in to veterinary medicine or similar fields to that though, I though you needed to do more 'science' (as opposed to 'arts') subjects, e.g. Maths? But if not, then yay!

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)
I am doing Music, English Literature, Fine Art and Psychology at AS.
For a career I want to be a teacher (in english, art or piano), a writer of some form (television, books, articles, etc), Work in design for television, Television production, Design for film, Theatre set design, Garden design, Art therapy, or there was a course I found for environmental conservation that didn't require biology at A level (something I regret not doing) and I've always had a passion for conservation.
So yeah, bit lost at sea at the moment. My AS results might help me decide... -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)With five A-levels you'll be pretty talented if you can fit in a load of extra curriculars on top of all your study. :P(Original post by DeathByBSOD)
Nice choices :P I'm gonna do Maths,Fmaths,Bio,Chem,Phys and a whole lot of extra curriculars for medicine lol -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)Oooh great haha! And well the majority of Universities that do Veterinary only require two sciences, so you don't need maths or physics, unless you want to apply for Cambridge haha! I'm hoping to go to Liverpool and they only ask for two(Original post by Asa123)

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)Sorted it with the uni's. Believe me, I've been emailing alot of places. My options are limited, but they exist(Original post by Vian)
I'm doing Biology, Chemistry, Maths and did AS Physics. I'm aiming for Dentistry! *cue everyone pointing and laughing*
Psychiatry as in the medical speciality? I'm sure most Medical Schools dislike it when students redo A-Levels, or have you sorted something out with the Uni's?

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)
I would like to work in conservation, although another option I'm considering is to become a writer or journalist, not sure yet
I'm pretty sure I want to do the IB, and do HL English Lit A1, Spanish B and Geography, and then SL History, Biology and Maths Studies. I'm only in Year 10 though, so I've got a while to think about it. To be honest, I'd be happy doing anything in geography, I just find it so interesting.

I would like to study English literature, Maths, Chemistry and History, and I would hopefully go on to university to study Law. In the future, I hope to be a barrister. I was going to choose French over History but I think History would strengthen my analytical skills even more.

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)
It really is shocking how many people are following or are considering doing a degree focused on science. I know in Ireland here they have this STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) notion and everyone is doing sciences and maths in my year because they think that in the future there will be no traditional jobs. Ask me? A lot of rubbish which will backfire. I know a few staff in my school who have said that our results have plummeted since STEM since people are doing it because they are told to.
I am going for English Literature, History, Politics & Religion and I am going to study Law in Uni. I hope to be a barrister or possibly move into politics.
Just be yourself and don't listen to people saying there is no jobs in law or humanities. Come a few years there will be so many scientists and doctors coming out they will be crying for law students. -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)Science is one of the most important subjects in modern society, our lives are built on foundations of science and technology, we are dependent on science. I personally don't find anything wrong with the increase of popularity of science and I very much agree with you about the fact that we need a balance of jobs; it is what society has built and must maintain.(Original post by ConorF)

But enough of my pontificating, all I have to say to you is this,
Chase your dreams, live with society and enjoy life, enjoy what you want to accomplish; life is then lived to its fullest. -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)You might be right especially with your last point. Personally though i am choosing the subjects which i genuinely have an interest in (which, as a matter of fact is why i am not choosing maths despite it "Opening doors").(Original post by ConorF)

There may well be an oversupply of some scientists, because of the sheer amount of science related degrees. However, i think a good degree science degree will always be useful.
I still think of myself as quite a literary person, even though i am taking sciency subjects.
Sorry for the ramble. -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)Totally agree the thing which winds me up is people I know actually turn their noses when I say I am not doing a science at A-Level. I mean come on? There is more to university and a way more to life than science. It just worries me that this thread is exactly like my school: Full of people doing the three sciences and maths or something very similar.(Original post by burgerrr)

I say if you honestly enjoy them subjects good for you and have fun. If not your wasting your time because with the amount of people doing them now even getting into a science degree has become somewhat impossible unless you have a flawless record. -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)
I'm hopefully going to commence my AS studies in September with the following subjects:
Biology
Chemistry
Maths
Modern History
Ultimately i'd like to go into Medicine but would consider an alternative course due to the competitive nature of getting into a medical school! -

this is compleatly wrong.... there is already way to many law students (40% unemployed last year and set to rise) the tesco law is coming in soon which will lower wages and destroy small companys and the "law" market is closing in on itself the amaount of solicitors and barristers needed are going down rapidley and there is way to many already
I also hope to go into law like the rest of my family but belive me its not going to be a nice world in the near future -
Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)For science then yes (Nice world in future); there is plenty of research to be done. (plugs in Portal reference)(Original post by Grammar Kid)

Re: A level choices and career hopes- care to share? ;)If I could make a suggestion, look into doing an A Level in Further Maths. It's a really useful subject for computing and is cited by most of the top universities. Oxford and Cambridge (If you want to apply to either of those) have specific mathematical tests for Computer Science applicants; the latter of which may specify that you also sit a STEP paper in Mathematics.(Original post by c3ntury)
Taking Computing, Modern History, Maths and Physics next year, hoping to end up with a PhD in Computer Science.
