.........Seriously? Whilst obviously it'a none of our business how you treat your body, it's not as though you need to smoke, no one is making you, plus how exactly is smoking 'enjoying yourself'? If you can't afford it don't do it or shut up.

For the record, I smoke, but I recognise that's just something I choose to do and if it's expensive then it's something expensive that I choose to do, no biggie. If it bothered me that much I'd stop choosing to do it (which I will be as soon as exams are over)
I enjoy smoking and I feel that the price for a pack of fags is too high. I am getting priced out of smoking and I am annoyed by it. Whats wrong with that?

we're in a recession and the price of everything is rising, soon enough we'll be paying for the air we breathe.

you should use this as an excuse to quit, not to make you determined to smoke more!

This is great news! Lets not think about money for a second, just think of how many years of your life and the life of the people you love are going to be saved! Give up seriously best thing you could do.

    Good Luck!

Edit: I respect the negs its your choice to smoke but i have seen first hand the conciseness of both first hand and second hand smoking. All im saying is if you did manage to overcome the addiction you would save both life and money.

I didn't want to quit. The way I treat my body has nothing to do with you, anyone else or the government. As an adult I wish to smoke at reasonable price and should be able to do that. It's ridiculous that so many people are priced out of a thing that they enjoy. The same thing is going to happen with alcohol as well with the 50p in the unit *******s. How are the poor supposed to enjoy themselves?
I'm not saying that smoking is wrong... but how would you feel about funding smokers hospital treatments as a non-smoking, tax paying adult?

The statistics are undenyable, smoking (and drinking for that matter) increase the chance of a vast number of diseases, the treatment of which costs the NHS an incredible amount of money.

Now, I'm a believer of people should be able to do what they want - heck I've had my fair share of alcohol related injuries, but it's something to think about, isn't it? It's not going to make me stop binge drinking in the near future though.

As for being ridiculous pricing people out - money is the one language everyone understands. Make people pay more for luxuries and they'll have less. It's fairly simple and has been proven by this thread. If the government wants to make people drink and smoke less then making it more expensive will work. People won't like it, but arguably it's a good thing for everyone.

How do you feel about funding people to get treatment on the NHS for anything somewhat self-inflicted? God that's what happens in life, people do stupid **** that isn't perfectly good for their health. We look out for each other cos we're all human and stupid at the end of the day.

You realise that the NHS is basically paid for many times over by smokers, right?

    £8 for a 20 deck
    £3.50 for a 10 deck
I'm talking £3.50 for 20 - my brother smokes like a chimney, I get used to his complaining about the price of tobacco.

    (Original post by OU Student)
Same. Was it really that long ago they were £3.50?
    Apparently!

I like this argument. One of the best I've heard re: funding the NHS for a while.

It just seems weird to me is all, if you think it's too expensive, don't do it. How can that annoy you? I see how it would be annoying if it was something you needed, but cigarettes?
It's pretty stupid to pay a lot to increase your chances of cancer (which I know you think is none of my business, but what I'm trying to get at is, why would it annoy you that you're priced out of smoking. I'm kind of happy to have another reason to quit, because, y'know, there is nothing to enjoy about smoking really.)

Also, I don't understand smokers who get angry when people tell them they should quit, if it's a stranger then yeah none of their business, but surely it's a good thing they want you to be healthier?

I recommend giving e-cigarettes a try for anyone struggling with affording cigs now. I moved from 20 marlboro reds a day to an ecigarette that costs me about 50p a day to fill up, I prefer the taste (currently smoking a strawberry flavour) and it doesn't give you cancer while still giving you beautifully flavoured nicotine.

I enjoy smoking though. As much as other people enjoying playing video games, listening to music, messing around on the internet. The thing I enjoy is going outside for five minutes and having a cigarette.

I don't like being priced out of doing something that I enjoy.

Also am I allowed to tell fat people not to order desert because it will kill them? No. So don't tell me I can't smoke.

It becomes the Government's issue when the taxpayer has to pickup the costs of your cancer treatment, heart surgeries and other health checkups that eventually cost tax payer's money.

Which is more than covered by the tax and duty on tobacco.
