Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?
I'm all right, I roll my own.
Going to France in the summer, so I can stock up then as well. My friend went recently and bought 50g for €4.50.
Can't say I blame the government for hiking up prices. We're addicted, therefore we'll pay, even if we do pay extortionate prices. I don't like it, but I see why they do it. -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Yeah great idea, wipe billions off tax revenue by creating a massive black market in imported tobacco.(Original post by brummielad)
good, make them 50quid a pack in my opinion -

It becomes the Government's issue when the taxpayer has to pickup the costs of your cancer treatment, heart surgeries and other health checkups that eventually cost tax payer's money.that argument hold absolutely no water as it is now well known the the amount that is generated by taxing cigarrettes by far outstrips the amount spent by the NHS on smoking related illness.(Original post by illusionz)
I'm not saying that smoking is wrong... but how would you feel about funding smokers hospital treatments as a non-smoking, tax paying adult?
The statistics are undenyable, smoking (and drinking for that matter) increase the chance of a vast number of diseases, the treatment of which costs the NHS an incredible amount of money.
Now, I'm a believer of people should be able to do what they want - heck I've had my fair share of alcohol related injuries, but it's something to think about, isn't it? It's not going to make me stop binge drinking in the near future though.
As for being ridiculous pricing people out - money is the one language everyone understands. Make people pay more for luxuries and they'll have less. It's fairly simple and has been proven by this thread. If the government wants to make people drink and smoke less then making it more expensive will work. People won't like it, but arguably it's a good thing for everyone.
Lets increase the tax on fast food, im not obese why should i pay for treatment of fat people, and even higher on alchohol as im not a heavy drinker so why should i pay for boozeheads to get clean.
I dont have cancer why should my NI contributions pay toward thier treatment? -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?So nothing at all then?(Original post by thunder_chunky)
Nothing that could cause me major health issues later in life. -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Fairly sure doing nothing at all has its sources of ill health too!(Original post by n00)
So nothing at all then?

Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?That's what I used to buy, but when they went up to about £5.50 or something, I started getting Richmonds. Now might have to buy a cheaper alternative again(Original post by AFC1993)
almost 8 quid for B&H Silvers now.

Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Disagree. As has been CLEARLY pointed out, there are many other associated government costs due to lung cancer besides the direct bill that the NHS has to cover.(Original post by silverbolt)

FYI, I have no problem with a "sin tax", which is present on other goods, such as alcohol, that I DO buy. They're not a necessity, and cause quite a few problems beyond the simple cost to the NHS. If the government wants to tax them, they can go right ahead, as these are completely non-essential items -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Hmm, mature.(Original post by ArtGoblin)
Again? I'm sure they've just gone up - they're nearly £8 a pack now. I absolutely resent being priced out of smoking, and it's making me determined not to quit. -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Treat us like children and we'll act like children. People lecturing at smokers all the time is not the way to get them to quit. It's just really annoying.(Original post by sarahthegemini)
Hmm, mature. -
Re: Rising cigarette prices!?!?!?Listen I'm of the belief that adults can do what they want so long as it's legal and I hope you don't get annoyed by this, but if you don't mind me asking, why do you smoke?(Original post by ArtGoblin)

I used to live in Dubai, UAE and there's a form of tobacco called Dokha there which is smoked out of a pipe and gives a 'buzz''. Sadly, it's a very common thing to see teenagers smoking this tobacco (myself included) but I don't regret smoking Dokha because the feeling is just immense.
Now that I live in the West Midlands, I can't get hold of Dokha as the only shops in the UK that sell it are in London, so I picked up cigarettes to keep the withdrawal at bay.
I get my cartons of 200 for £30 each
