    Part time jobs at uni
I start uni at University of Birmingham in September and I want to try and find a job on campus.

Where is the best place to look and when should I start applying for jobs?
Will employers give freshers jobs if they apply now and don't start until September?

    Thanks!

Re: Part time jobs at uni
Hi. I'm a current first year student at the university of Birmingham. This time last year I was very much like yourself, keen to get a part time job on campus, maybe working in the guild. I do know first year students working at the guild but they only just started a month or two ago; the truth is there won't be many, if any, openings for jobs on campus in september. However, my advice to you is to embrace the first semester, at least, of uni. You might find yourself taking up some crazy sport which restricts the times you can work. You don't wanna find yourself not being able to do something because you have tables to wait on. Once you've figured out your surroundings, course, and the time you have available, then I suggest you look for a job in Birmingham.

During freshers week there will be a jobs fair. Local employers come in and its a nice easy way to get loads of information in one go.

Failing that, theres always ticket sales.

As well as the jobs fair in Welcome Week there's also the Jobzone in the Guild. The Jobzone ads are also on the Guild website but you'll need to have registered before you can get on there. I would agree though, it takes a while to settle into uni and adjust to juggling all the new and different things. I don't know many people who got a job straightaway but a large amount did after settling in a few months down the line. Best of luck

Just one thing to say about ticket sales - remember that it is illegal for any student to be selling club tickets from their rooms (this is due to a line that states tenants are not permitted to run a business from their room). But you can sell tickets if you do it from a set place all the time (ie, not giving out your phone number and getting people to come to your room etc) and you can work as a promoter for club events etc.

But as people have already said. There is the Jobs Fair etc at several times during the year and also the JobZone... found here: http://www.guildofstudents.com/jobshop/

don't get a job until after xmas - you'll need that time to settle in! you can get a job handing out flyers - they always want those people to stand on the bridges (altho warning - people will hate you) or you could go for one of the few jobs in the guild. failing that, there's a sainsbury's in selly oak!

    Hi there,

I'm just about to start my 3rd year at UOB in September and have had various part time jobs over my time at uni.

The University have their own job zone where all vacancies on and off campus are listed: http://www.guildofstudents.com/jobshop/

Furthermore there are lots of opportunities in and around Birmingham and the local area.

Lots of places will be hiring in September.

    Hope this helps

    Hannah

do people honestly think getting a job right away is bad? I was hoping to get one right away as I'm not going to have much money in uni :/

The main problem I can think of is that you almost certainly won't have your final timetable till at least 3-4 weeks into term - and I had a seminar and lectures that didn't finish till 6 every week. If you're in the same boat you might find you have job / timetable conflicts.

I'd seriously wait. What course are you doing by the way, that will have an impact - if you're doing History you'd be a lot more flexible but if you were doing Physics like me, you'd only really be able to get a weekend job.

Ok, well I have a friend doing that and I think she's in about 16 hours a week so you're likely to be less flexible than some. If you do get anything just make sure it's only about 6 hours max because you'll struggle to balance social life and Uni work with work work otherwise I think

Other thing; you might struggle to find a job ON campus in first year. There are 2 spars, a Costa that's opening but they've just recruited for next year, a Starbucks and then the Guild things like Joes Bar but they generally take people who have previous bar experience and recruit in Freshers week so keep an eye out! They sometimes advertise things on my.bham so log in when you get your logon and it'll be in the middle at the top if there's anything

As well as the Job Zone in the Guild, the uni is starting a service called Worklink, which is basically a recruitment agency for casual on-campus work for students. I've got a couple of jobs on campus and they work really well in terms of hours and convenience. Some more info here: https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/ha.../Worklink.aspx
