First car purchase - owner can't deliver and I can't get temp insurance?
I'm about to purchase my first car, but it looks like I'm stuck on how I'll be getting it home.

It's a private seller, but they live 130 miles away from me. They no longer have insurance on the car and I can't seem to get any of the temporary insurance policies since I'm under 21.

What's the best way to go about this? I certainly won't be driving it for 130 miles while uninsured. Are there any companies that will provide a few days of insurance for a 19-year-old? Or any cheap towing services?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    First bit's a good idea.

How expensive would the second option be for OP?

I'm new to all of this. Wouldn't it be better to wait until I get home to insure the car? And since it's a cash trade, I don't really want to insure the car prior to actually owning it.

Just have your insurance start on the day you will be collecting it.

anybody who is over 25 and fully comp. is usually insured to drive other cars under 3rd party insurance. Get your parents to check their policies and they may be able to drive it back. Or get them to get temp insurance and pay for it yourself if not.

I agree with you about not wanting to insure until you own. As it is a private seller, it could all fall through at the last minute, and that means admin costs etc in most cases. However, it may be your only viable option if parents/relatives arent able to drive it for you.

Why not call up your insurance company before you go, and go through everything and get a quote and all that, and then they'll give you a reference number. When you go to get the car, once you've handed over the money, call the insurance company back up with your reference number and be like, yep I want that cover, and then pay over the phone and job's done. Get in the car and drive back. I've done this with two of my cars.

Find a mate in the motor trade with a trade policy and they can drive it, somebody with 3rd party cover on any vehicle is only covered if the car itself has insurance on it. There are transport companies but they charge a lot of money.

Only if the vehicle has its own insurance.

    Give that a go.
You're basically auctioning off a transport job.

Always been good when I've needed stuff moving. Providing you're not too specific with dates and times you can get some good deals.

If you're definitely having it, go with insuring it now. You don't have to actually start the insurance vefore you've bought it, but like someone above said, if you get the quote specific to you and that car you can just call up with the reference number to start the quote as son as you've bought it. That way you're not throwing away extra money to get a car that you're going to be insured on anyway, moved.

You need to be 21 for temp insurance so you can't do that.

So ask someone over 21? Parent/sibling/aunty/uncle/cousin?!

There are one or two temp insurance companies that offer temp cover for U21s, but when I got a quote for a day it was over £100. In the end, my mum rang her insurance company and got a cover note that let her drive the car for 48hrs for about a tenner. You can do this without the car being insured by someone else as well.

Theres a company on temp cover that insures drivers younger than that, but they are very stingy on the cars they will insure, forget anything powerful or sporty.

Only if the vehicle has its own insurance.
Not necessarily correct because it depends on the policy wording of the fully comp driver who is insured to drive vehicles not owned by them etc

A recent high court case determined this after plod said driver was not insured and took the car
The court looked at the insurance policy and said there was no stipulation on the policy which stated that the non owned car had to be insured

    Read policy carefully first

Where does this car need picking up from and where to?

I might be able to help
