AQA English lit exam 24th May- Poetry
I'm doing the place poems, and was just wondering if anybody else is doing this section, I was just wondering which poems do people think compare well with each other, so far I've got some parings:
The Blackbird of Glanmore and the Wild Swans at Coole
The Moment and Below the Green Corrie
Price we pay for the sun and the Vision
Crossing the Loch and Extract from the Prelude
The Wild Swans at Coole and the Moment
Spellbound and Wind
Storm in the Black forest and Spellbound
So the poems which I have't got any to compare with at the moment are
Cold Knap Lake
Hard Water
London
I was wondering what do you think of these comparisons, and which other poems do you think these three compare well with? -
Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- Poetry
I'm so glad someone else is doing place, I couldn't find anyone!
In my mind I've linked together -
London and Crossing the Loch (threat and danger so could also work with the Prelude)
Cold Knap Lake and Crossing the Loch (both about things not being as they seem, doubting memories. Things also not as they seem in Neighbours and to an extent the Moment)
Hard Water and Neighbours (both about belonging and sense of community)
The ones you've already got work really well
Unless you're doing foundation you won't be directly asked about The Blackbird of Glanmore and Spellbound I think it is. Also Wind and London were asked about last year, so were the themes of feelings about a place and threat of nature.
Good luck for the exam, I'm really nervous for it!Last edited by 68242; 23-05-2012 at 17:16. -
Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryI cannot quite describe how happy I was when I read those comparisons, I feel really stupid nor for not spotting them XD, but they make loads of sense, thank you so much, and I know right nearly everyone else I've asked seems to be doing the conflict ones.(Original post by 68242)

I'm really nervous about the exam too, especially as I got a B in the 1H module, so I really badly need to get an A in this to meet my target grade of an A, but I'm hoping my coursework mark of an A* should help out a little to even it all out. I'm feeling a litl emore confident about htis exam than last years just because I'm better at analysing poetry over books but I'm still really nervous that my mind will just go blank in the exam.
Good luck to you too

Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryWow same here! I retook the paper on Tuesday becuase wasn't happy with a B after last year. Which books did you do I did the Crucible and To Kill a mockingbird. I also have double chemistry tomorrow straight before English which is really going to suck plus I have a product design exam first thing on Friday so I've been trying to prepare for four big exams at once TOO MANY EXAMS!(Original post by 68242)
I too got an A* in the coursework but did the paper 1 on tuesday so no idea how I've done - extra pressure there! Also got chemistry tomorrow so I'm not confident about the english straight after

Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryI did An Inspector Calls and Of Mice and Men. It was really worrying when we came out as everyone said there's had gone really well and mine was awful!(Original post by Zozzy)

Too many exams for me as well. I have latin first thing on friday and it is my worst subject - I am doomed!! -
Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryDid everybody at your school really find it easy? People I spoke to at my school said it was really difficult too, and some people were doing of Mice and Men so I wouldn't worry about it too much, and again looking at the forums on here it seems that people generally think it was pretty difficult so hopefully the grade boundaries will be low *crosses fingers*(Original post by 68242)

Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryThat is awful, I thought my worst day was bad and that's only history, physics and latin(Original post by Zozzy)

Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- Poetry
Hey guys, hows you're exams going so far? My biggest worry has definitely been English Lit, however, I found the exam on Tuesday fairly easy. I did To Kill A Mockingbird and An Inspector Calls and the question for Inspector was a god-send. In terms of Poetry tomorrow, I'm doing Place to and I'm worried once again as Poetry is not my strong point that's for sure. I found that you can compare the place of London and A Vision together. Both poets show a pessimistic view towards the poems and both poems show a bleak outlook on the place. A Vision contrasts the future tense with the past tense in the first line portraying an idea that the future is already written, and the poet shows contrasts between an ideal future with reality to display disappointment, London talks about chartered streets ETC..
You could also compare the place in Hard Water with Price We Pay For The Sun and Cold Knap Lake goes well with the Moment. One I also find that goes especially well together is Storm In The Black Forest and Wind.
I wish you guys the best of luck for tomorrow
I have chemistry additional at 9, worried about that too

Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- Poetry
I wouldn't manage 5 paragraphs but I write slowly. What I do is -
Introduction - briefly mention the three points I'm discussing.
P1 - First point on any similarity difference. First and last sentence to link point to the question.
P2+P3 - Same as first paragraph, obviously different points!
Conclusion - Link what I've written back to question and evaluate poems. -
Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- Poetryit kind of depends on what the question asks really. you could compare them all really because they all portray a type of conflict but here's some pairs. btw if your doing higher tier, Flag, Falling leaves and Right word will not be named(Original post by Wintabix)
Hey is anyone doing the conflict poetry? Anyone got a good idea on which poems to pair up? Thanks
so im only revising Flag from these 3 cuz its good for comparison.
Come on, Come back - ‘Out of the Blue’ – an imagined voice, a victim &
‘Bayonet Charge’ – the soldier’s experience
Next to of course god America i - ‘Bayonet Charge’ – patriotism in theory and practice &
‘Flag’ – patriotism, symbols and causes of conflict
Hawk Roosting - ‘Hawk Roosting’ is very different from other poems in the cluster, which generally are upset by conflict and seek to question it, whereas ‘Hawk Roosting’ perhaps tries to explain it. Consider what other poems say about human nature in comparison with ‘Hawk Roosting’.
Mametz Wood - ‘Poppies’ – contemporary poem, mourning loss & ‘Futility’ and ‘The Falling Leaves’ – World War 1, death and loss
The Charge of the Light Brigade - ‘Bayonet Charge’ – account of battle and experience of the battlefield & ‘Futility’ – death in battle: noble or futile? & ‘Come On, Come Back’ – contrasting tone in the aftermath of battle
At the Border, 1979 - ‘next to of course god america i’ – reflection on belonging and national identity
Out of the Blue - ‘Bayonet Charge’ – 1st person, dramatic monologue and experience of conflict & ‘Belfast Confetti’ – 1st person and civilian victim of terrorism
The Yellow Palm - ‘Belfast Confetti’ – city/civilians under attack & ‘Come On, Come Back’ – sadness and loss of innocence & ‘At the Border, 1979’ – civilians and Iraq
Flag (not named but good comparison) - ‘At the Border, 1979’ – causes of conflict &
‘next to of course god america i’ – concepts of patriotism
Belfast Confetti - ‘Out of the Blue’ – civilian’s experience, impact of conflict / terrorism &
‘The Yellow Palm’ – impact of conflict on city and its people
Bayonet Charge - ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ – experience of conflict/battle &
‘Come On Come Back’ – consequences of battle & ‘next to of course god america i’ – patriotism
Poppies - ‘Futility’ – death and the loss of a carefully nurtured life
Futility - ‘Mametz Wood’ – WW1, soldiers and death & ‘Poppies’ – mourning and loss
Bit confusing and its kind of late, but hope it helped

You don't get marks for intros and cons
What similarities would you pick out (language sims, structure sim?
for language you could say whether or not they both have: repetition, alliteration, assonance, similies, metaphors, personifictaion etc.
for structure: lengths of sentences + effects, lengths of stanzas, enjambment, punctuaution.
for form: rhyme scheme, is it a sonnet? is it a ballad? does sound lyrical?
you could also mention attitude and tone
-
Re: AQA English lit exam 24th May- PoetryAll of those and recurring themes like comparing the mountains to highwaymen in one poem and use of colloquial language in Hard Water.(Original post by Saba Mumraz)
